Uses and Benefits

Amaryl M Tablet 1mg is used to treat type-2 diabetes which helps to reduce/control hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels in the blood). This medicine may also be used with other drugs as a combination therapy. The medicine further helps to prevent blindness, kidney damage, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and other problems caused by type-2 diabetes. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which this drug may be used upon doctor’s discretion.

The active ingredients of Amaryl M Tablet 1mg are Glimepiride 1mg and Metformin 500mg.

Mechanism of Action of Drugs

Metformin works by decreasing hepatic glucose production by withholding gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis. This slows down the intestinal absorption of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity.

On the other hand, Glimepiride acts as an insulin secretagogue. It lowers blood sugar by stimulating the release of insulin by pancreatic beta cells and by inducing increased activity of intracellular insulin receptors.

Patients with the following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their health care professional before using Amaryl M Tablet 1mg:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients used in the Amaryl M Tablet 1mg such as Metformin and Glimepiride
  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Lactic acidosis
  • Hypoxemia
  • Dehydration
  • Sepsis
  • Surgery
  • Hepatic disease
  • Caution:
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Patients 65 years and old
  • Premenopausal anovulatory patients
  • Hypoglycemic risk
  • Hypersensitive to sulphonamides
  • G6PD deficiency
  • Autonomic neuropathy
  • Elder or debilitated patients

Side and Adverse Effects

The following side effects may or may not occur during the usage of Amaryl M Tablet 1mg. It is generally well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dosage guidelines. More common ones are generally mild and may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Asthenia
  • Flatulence
  • Indigestion
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Anorexia
  • Headache
  • Metallic taste
  • Rash
  • Ovulation induction
  • Dizziness
  • Photosensitivity

Rare but more serious adverse effects may include:

  • Lactic acidosis
  • Anemia Megaloblastic
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • SIADH
  • Porphyria
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Stevens-johnson syndrome
  • Agranulocytosis
  • Pancytopenia
How to Use

How to Use

Take the Amaryl tablet as per your doctor’s prescribed dosage and timings. Do not exceed the dose prescribed by him/her.
Swallow Amaryl M Tablet M1 whole, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break/cut/chew it instead.
Avoid missing a dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it is time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t consume two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
Take the Amaryl M Tablet 1mg with food or take immediately before or during breakfast but do not skip meals.

Overdosage

Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Hypoglycemia
  • Lactic acidosis
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Epigastric pain
  • Hypoglycemia accompanied by neurological symptoms

Warnings and Precautions

Take Amaryl M Tablet 1mg only on the advice of a medical practitioner. Dosage adjustment or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

Kidney:

Do not use Amaryl M Tablet 1mg if you have any severe kidney diseases until unless advised by the doctor.

Liver:

Inform your doctor if you have any hepatic problems before taking Amaryl M Tablet M1.

Pregnancy:

Metformin: Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while using this medicine – because it is not known whether this drug harm a fetus or not.
Glimepiride: Caution advised during pregnancy – it is not known whether this drug may affect a newborn or not. Also, no human data available. There is a noted risk of prolonged severe fetal hypoglycemia at birth based on animal data.

Lactation:

Metformin: Do not breastfeed an infant while using this medicine – because safety during lactation is not yet established.
Glimepiride: No human data available to evaluate effects on milk production or infant harm during breastfeeding, therefore, consider taking an alternative.

Alcohol:

Do not take alcohol while using this medicine, this may decrease your blood sugar levels and may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and also interferes with diabetes treatment.

Drug Interactions:

Caution always advised when used with other drugs most importantly Digoxin, Furosemide, Probenecid, Aspirin or other salicylates, Blood thinners, Sulfa drugs, insulin or other oral diabetes medications.

Precautions
  • Keep Amaryl M Tablet 1mg from out of sight and reach of children.
  • Store between 15-30 degree centigrade, protect from light and moisture.
  • Do not use the medicine beyond its expiry.
  • Do not use Amaryl M Tablet 1mg if the tablet strip is torn or the tablet is broken.

What is Glimepiride for:

It is used to lower blood sugar in patients with high blood sugar (diabetes).

How does Glimepiride work:

Glimepiride raises insulin levels and helps tissues respond better to the insulin.

How should Glimepiride be used:

This drug may be used alone or with other high blood sugar (diabetes) drugs. Take as you have been told, even if you are feeling better. Take with the first meal of the day. Follow the diet and workout plan that your doctor told you about.

Common side effects of Glimepiride :

Low blood sugar. Signs include anger, shaking, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or sweating. Keep hard candies, glucose tablets, liquid glucose, or juice on hand for low blood sugar. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Weight gain.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking Glimepiride :

If you have an allergy to gliclazide or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you have a sulfa (sulfonamide) allergy, talk with your doctor. If you have any of these health problems: Acidic blood problem, very bad kidney disease, very bad liver disease, or type 1 diabetes. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant. If you are breast-feeding.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Signs of infection. These include a fever of 100.5F (38C) or higher, chills, very bad sore throat, ear or sinus pain, cough, more sputum or change in color of sputum, pain with passing urine, mouth sores, wound that will not heal, or anal itching or pain. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very low blood sugar or very high blood sugar. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Glimepiride with other medicines:

Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
