What is Digoxin for:

This medication is a purified cardiac glycoside derived from leaves of digitalis plant, prescribed for congestive heart failure. It helps the heart work better, which controls the heart rate.

How does Digoxin work:

Digoxin makes the heart strong by adding to calcium inside the cells of the heart. The heart may pump stronger and better. It slows fast heartbeats.

How should Digoxin be used:

Loading dose: 0.75-1.5 mg in the 1st 24 hour. Slow digitalization: 250 mcg 1-2 timesday. Usual maintenance: 125-250 mcgday. It comes as a tablet and syrup to take by mouth, with or without food. It also comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein.

Common side effects of Digoxin :

Feeling dizzy. Rise slowly over a few minutes when sitting or lying down. Be careful climbing. Belly pain. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). A faster, harmful heartbeat may rarely happen. A slower, harmful heartbeat may rarely happen.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking Digoxin :

Digoxin may not be suitable for certain heart conditions. Alert your doctor to any heart conditions that you have.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Change in thinking clearly and with logic. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very loose stools (diarrhea). A big weight gain. Sudden change in eyesight or the way you see color. Objects may have yellowgreen halos. Not able to eat. Feeling very tired or weak. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Digoxin with other medicines:

Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.

Are there any food restrictions

Avoid alcohol. - Do not take Digoxin together with high fibre foods such as cereals, high fibre bread, fruit or vegetables as it can reduce the absorption of Digoxin.

How do I store Digoxin :

Store it at room temperature, and in an airtight container. Keep away from children.
