Mechanism of Action of Drugs

Sodium bicarbonate is an alkalizer, works by increasing the pH of blood and urine, thereby neutralises metabolic acidosis. Sodium chloride works by replenishing salt and electrolyte levels in case of excess fluid loss such as diarrhea. Polyethylene glycol works by bringing water into the colon through osmosis which makes the stools softer and easier to pass. It also pulls ammonia from the blood into the intestine which is then removed through feces. It reduces absorption of ammonium ions and other toxic nitrogenous compounds. Potassium chloride is a mineral which is used to prevent low amounts of potassium in the blood.
