What is Para-Aminobenzoic acid for:

Para-aminobenzoic acid or PABA is taken orally for various skin disorders like vitiligo, dermatomyositis, pemphigus, morphea, lymphoblastoma cutis, Peyronie?s disease, and scleroderma. PABA is also commonly used for the treatment of infertility among women, arthritis, anemia, rheumatic fever, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), constipation and headaches. Other uses include for darkening gray hair, prevention of hair loss, to make skin look younger, and also for the prevention of sunburn. It is however best known as a sunscreen that is applied to the skin (used topically). PABA is effective during sweating, but not when skin is submerged in water like while swimming.

How does Para-Aminobenzoic acid work:

Para-aminobenzoic acid, as part of the coenzyme tetrahydrofolic acid, aids in the metabolism and utilization of amino acids and is also supportive of blood cells, particularly the red blood cells. PABA supports folic acid production by the intestinal bacteria. PABA is important to skin, hair pigment, and intestinal health. Used as a sunscreen, it also can protect against the development of sunburn and skin cancer from excess ultraviolet light exposure.

How should Para-Aminobenzoic acid be used:

PABA is best when applied directly to the skin. However PABA increases the likelihood of sunburn in some people, even though it usually works as a sun block. It can also be taken orally and can even be applied to the eyes as a solution. Care should be taken however to avoid taking high doses by mouth. To prevent sunburn, PABA sunscreens come in concentrations of 1% to 15%.

Common side effects of Para-Aminobenzoic acid :

PABA is likely safe for most people when applied directly to the skin and is possibly safe when taken orally and when applied to the eyes as a solution. PABA can cause skin irritation and might also stain clothing with a yellow color. Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, and loss of appetite might sometimes occur. The medication is possibly unsafe when taken by mouth in high doses. Taking more than 12 grams per day can cause serious side effects such as liver, kidney, and blood problems.

What do I do if I miss a dose

-

What precautions should I take when taking Para-Aminobenzoic acid :

Using the medicine intravenously is likely to increase the risk of bleeding in people with bleeding disorders. PABA might build up in the kidneys making kidney disease worse. Therefore one is advised against using it when suffering from kidney disorders. Using PABA intravenously might increase the risk of bleeding during surgery. Hence it is advised to stop taking PABA 2 weeks before surgery. Also do not take the medication by mouth if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. If you are taking sulfa antibiotics, do not take PABA supplements except on medical advice.

When do I need to seek medical help

If the symtoms worsen or if there are new troublesome symptoms, then immediately consult your doctor.

Can I take Para-Aminobenzoic acid with other medicines:

Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) interacts with Antibiotics (Sulfonamide antibiotics) and can decrease their effectiveness. Some of these antibiotics include sulfamethoxazole, sulfasalazine, sulfisoxazole, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. PABA also interacts with Dapsone used as an antibiotic and reduces its effectiveness in treating infections. PABA interacts with Cortisone decreasing how quickly the body breaks down cortisone. Taking PABA by mouth and getting a cortisone shot might increase the effects and side effects of cortisone.

How do I store Para-Aminobenzoic acid :

Keep container tightly closed. It is suitable for any general chemical storage area. Containers of this material may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residue.

Pregnancy Category

Pregnancy category: Not studied. PABA is safe when applied to the skin during pregnancy or breast-feeding. However, there is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking PABA by mouth if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.
