      Acetazolarc tablet is a medicine that is used to treat glaucoma, an eye condition with high pressure in the eyes which may eventually lead to blindness. It is also used to treat oedema, abnormal accumulation of fluid which may be associated with congestive heart failure. It relieves the symptoms such as upset stomach, shortness of breath, dizziness associated with altitude or mountain sickness. In combination with other medicines, it is also used in treating epilepsies such as petit mal and unlocalized seizures. However, the uses mentioned here are not comprehensive, there may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

      Acetazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that works by blocking the actions of certain enzymes in the body and decreases the production of fluid in the eye, thereby lowering increased eye pressure. It also reduces swelling and relieves symptoms of altitude or mountain sickness and controls seizures.

      How to Use

      How to Use

      Take Acetazolarc tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
      Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
      The tablet should be taken with food. Take the tablet at the same time every day as it helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body.
      Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested.

      Overdosage

      Avoid taking medicine more than the prescribed dosage. If you notice any unusual or abnormal reactions after taking the tablet, promptly seek medical attention. Depending on the dosage of Acetazolarc tablet, symptoms vary in individuals, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

      Kidney:

      Caution is advised among people with kidney problems. Close monitoring of kidney function and adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the taking medicine. However, use of the tablet is not recommended in patients with severe renal impairment.

      Liver:

      Caution is advised among people with liver problems. Adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any hepatic problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the taking the medicine. However, use of the tablet is not recommended in patients with severe liver impairment.

      Pregnancy:

      Acetazolarc tablet is not considered safe to use in pregnant women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. Despite the fact that there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown adverse effects on the developing baby. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consumption of this medicine.

      Lactation:

      This medicine is considered safe to use in nursing mothers unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. Since limited information is available about the safety of taking this tablet, consult your doctor if you are nursing mother and stay on the safe side.

      Alcohol:

      Interaction of alcohol with Acetazolarc tablet is unknown. Any symptoms of abnormal reactions after taking the medicine should be reported to your doctor immediately.

      Driving:

      The tablet may decrease alertness, cause impaired judgement, affect your vision and make you feel dizzy, difficulty in concentration, fatigue, light headedness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

      Food:

      There are no known food interactions with this tablet.

      Drug Interactions:

      All medicines interact differently from person to person. Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Acetazolarc tablet with phenytoin, carbamazepine, digoxin, ciclosporin, quinidine, amphetamine, methenamine, lithium, hypoglycaemics, warfarin, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium salicylate, aspirin, cisapride, amiodarone, zonisamide.

      What is Acetazolamide for:

      It is used to get rid of oedema (extra fluid). It is used to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms of altitude (mountain) sickness. It is used to stop or control seizures in certain types of epilepsy. It is used to treat glaucoma.

      How does Acetazolamide work:

      Acetazolamide gets rid of extra salt and water in the body. It calms the brain. It shortens the time it takes to get used to the high altitude. It lowers pressure in the eye.

      How should Acetazolamide be used:

      Acetazolamide comes as a tablet and capsule to take by mouth. Take with or without food. Take with food if it causes an upset stomach. Long-acting products: Swallow whole. Do not chew, break, or crush. There is a liquid (suspension) if you cannot swallow pills. Shake well before use.

      Common side effects of Acetazolamide :

      Upset stomach or throwing up; Bad taste in your mouth; Loose stools (diarrhea).

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

      What precautions should I take when taking Acetazolamide :

      Tell your doctor if you are allergic to acetazolamide, sulfa drugs, diuretics, or any other drugs. If you have any of these health problems: Acidic blood problem, kidney disease, liver disease, low potassium levels, low sodium levels, lung disease, or poor adrenal function, inform your doctor. Acetazolamide may make your skin sensitive to sunlight. Avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and wear protective clothing.       Seek help if you think there was an overdose or signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing, chest tightness, fever, itching, bad cough, blue or gray skin color, seizures, or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.
