What is Zoledronate for:

Zolendronate strengthens bone and is primarily used to treat osteoporosis. It belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates which increase bone density and decrease bone fractures.

How does Zoledronate work:

New bone is laid down by cells called osteoblasts while old bone is removed by cells called osteoclasts. Bisphosphonates strengthen bone by inhibiting bone removal (resorption) by osteoclasts.

How should Zoledronate be used:

It comes as an injection and is usually administered by medical personnel. Unopened bottles can be kept at room temperature (below 30C). Opened bottles should be refrigerated and used within 24 hrs.

Common side effects of Zoledronate :

The most common side effects are fever, muscle pain, headache, and pains in the hands and feet. Low calcium levels may occur if calcium and vitamin D intake is not adequate. Patients may experience jaw problems associated with delayed healing and infection after tooth extraction. Rare cases of severe allergic reaction have been reported.

What do I do if I miss a dose

What precautions should I take when taking Zoledronate :

When combined with antibiotics such as gentamicin or diuretics like furosemide or bumetanide, it may lead to reduced calcium in blood. It should be used with caution in patients with weak kidney function or those taking drugs that affect kidney function.

When do I need to seek medical help

Seek help if you are experiencing a severe allergic reaction. Symptoms include rash, swelling, and difficulty in breathing. Contact your doctor if any side effects are severe or are worsening.

Can I take Zoledronate with other medicines:

Use with caution in patients taking drugs that affect kidney function and in those taking antibiotics such as gentamicin or loop diuretics.

How do I store Zoledronate :

Store at room temperature under 30C when unopened and refrigerate after opening and use within 24 hrs.

Pregnancy Category

Category D : There is positive evidence of human fetal risk. Do not use in pregnant or nursing mothers.
