This medication is a cholinesterase inhibitor, prescribed for dementia of Alzheimers disease. It works by increasing the amount of acetylcholine in the brain, which helps in improving mental function.
Donepezil raises a chemical called acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine may be involved in memory, attention, and learning.
Adult: PO- Initial: 5 mgday in the evening, up to 10 mgday after 4-6 week. It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with or without food.
Feeling dizzy. Rise slowly over a few minutes when sitting or lying down. Be careful climbing. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). Headache. Not able to sleep. Not hungry. Weight loss.
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. - Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Donepezil.
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Signs of low mood (depression), thoughts of killing yourself, nervousness, emotional ups and downs, thinking that is not normal, anxiety, or lack of interest in life. Trouble breathing. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very loose stools (diarrhea). Any bruising or bleeding. A big weight loss. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here: - painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen. - antifungal medicines such as ketoconazole. - quinidine (a heart medicine). - mood medicines such as fluoxetine. - TB medicine such as rifampicin. - epilepsy medicines such as phenytoin or carbamazepine. - other medicines for treatment of dementia. - herbs such as St. Johns wort and ginkgo biloba. - Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store it at controlled room temperature (15° to 30°C), and in an airtight container.
