Amaryl Tablet 3mg is an oral medicine to treat Type-2 diabetes – used with proper diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in Type-2 diabetes. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which this medication may be used upon a doctor’s discretion.

The active ingredient of Amaryl Tablet 1mg is Glimepiride 3mg.

Mechanism of Action of Drugs

Mechanism of Action of Glimepiride:

Glimepiride acts as an insulin secretagogue. It lowers blood sugar by stimulating the release of insulin by pancreatic beta cells and by inducing increased activity of intracellular insulin receptors.

Patients with the following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their health care professional before taking the Amaryl Tablet 1mg:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients used in the Amaryl Tablet 3mg such as Glimepiride
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Caution:
  • Hypersensitivity to sulphonamides
  • G6PD deficiency
  • Hypoglycemia risk
  • Autonomic neuropathy
  • Elderly or debilitated patients

Side and Adverse Effects

The following side effects may or may not occur during the usage of this Amaryl Tablet 3mg. It is generally well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dosage guidelines. More common ones are generally mild and may include:

  • Hypoglycemia

  • Photosensitivity

Rare but more serious adverse effects may include:

How to Use

How to Use

Take the Amaryl tablet as per your doctor’s prescribed dosage and timings. Do not exceed the dose prescribed by him/her.
Swallow Amaryl Tablet 3mg whole, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break/cut/chew it instead.
Avoid missing a tablet. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t consume two doses at the same time which may be dangerous to your health.
Amaryl Tablet 3mg should be taken with food, take immediately before or during breakfast, or the 1st main meal in your day. Do not skip meals.

Overdosage

Avoid taking Amaryl Tablet 3mg more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Epigastric pain
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor
  • Visual disturbance
  • Coordination problems
  • Sleepiness
  • Coma
  • Convulsions

Warnings and Precautions

Take Amaryl Tablet 3mg only on the advice of a medical practitioner. Dosage adjustment or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

Kidney:

Caution advised among people with renal problems. If you have any, consult your doctor before the consumption of this Amaryl Tablet 3mg.

Liver:

Caution advised among people with hepatic problems. If you have any, consult your doctor before the consumption of this Amaryl Tablet 3mg.

Pregnancy:

Caution during pregnancy; stop taking this Amaryl Tablet 3mg >2 weeks before the expected date of delivery and use alternative; human data is not available; risk of teratogenicity is low.

Lactation:

Consider alternative during breastfeeding, no human data available to evaluate effects on milk production and risk to the breastfed infant. Therefore, inform your doctor if you are a nursing mother during the treatment.

Drug Interactions:

Caution always advised when used with other drugs. Therefore, inform your doctor if you start or stop using any medication(s) during the treatment (if any) to avoid drug interactions.

Precautions
  • Keep the medicine out of sight and reach of children.
  • Store below 30 degree-centigrade, protect from moisture.
  • Do not use the Amaryl Tablet 3mg beyond its expiry.

What is Glimepiride for:

It is used to lower blood sugar in patients with high blood sugar (diabetes).

How does Glimepiride work:

Glimepiride raises insulin levels and helps tissues respond better to the insulin.

How should Glimepiride be used:

This drug may be used alone or with other high blood sugar (diabetes) drugs. Take as you have been told, even if you are feeling better. Take with the first meal of the day. Follow the diet and workout plan that your doctor told you about.

Common side effects of Glimepiride :

Low blood sugar. Signs include anger, shaking, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or sweating. Keep hard candies, glucose tablets, liquid glucose, or juice on hand for low blood sugar. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Weight gain.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking Glimepiride :

If you have an allergy to gliclazide or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you have a sulfa (sulfonamide) allergy, talk with your doctor. If you have any of these health problems: Acidic blood problem, very bad kidney disease, very bad liver disease, or type 1 diabetes. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant. If you are breast-feeding.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Signs of infection. These include a fever of 100.5°F (38°C) or higher, chills, very bad sore throat, ear or sinus pain, cough, more sputum or change in color of sputum, pain with passing urine, mouth sores, wound that will not heal, or anal itching or pain. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very low blood sugar or very high blood sugar. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Glimepiride with other medicines:

Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.

How do I store Glimepiride :

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
