      What is Amiodarone for:

      It is used to treat a fast heartbeat and certain types of abnormal heart rhythms.

      How does Amiodarone work:

      Amiodarone lowers the effects of chemicals on the heart. It works by relaxing overactive heart muscles.

      How should Amiodarone be used:

      Take Amiodarone exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. - You may need to take Amiodarone for some time before the full benefits can be felt. - Do not be discouraged if you do not feel better soon after taking the medicine. - Amiodarone must be taken regularly for it to work well. - Continue taking Amiodarone even when you feel better. - Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor. - Your condition may worsen rapidly if Amiodarone is stopped suddenly. - Amiodarone may be taken with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. - Swallow it whole, do not chew or crush.

      Common side effects of Amiodarone :

      Upset stomach or throwing up; Hard stools (constipation; Sunburn.

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. - Do not change the dose or stop this drug. - Talk with the doctor.

      What precautions should I take when taking Amiodarone :

      Alert your doctor if you have an allergy to iodine. - Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you are planning to have a baby. - Use effective birth control methods while being treated with Amiodarone and for several months after you stop treatment with Amiodarone. - Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. - Amiodarone passes into the breast milk. - Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Amiodarone. - Amiodarone may not be suitable for certain heart conditions. - Alert your doctor to any heart conditions that you have.

      When do I need to seek medical help

      Seek help if you think there was an overdose or signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Seek help if you notice very low blood sugar or very high blood sugar. - Very bad dizziness. - Trouble breathing. - Feeling cold. - Very bad belly pain. - Very upset stomach or throwing up. - Very loose stools (diarrhea). - A big weight loss. - Very bad muscle pain or weakness. - Feeling very tired or weak. - Any rash. - Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

      Can I take Amiodarone with other medicines:

      Amiodarone may affect the way other medicines work. There are also several other medicines that can affect the way Amiodarone works in your body. - Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here: Medicines for heart disease or high blood pressure, especially digoxin, disopyramide, verapamil, sotalol, frusemide, clonidine, prazosin. Blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin or clopidogrel. - Antiviral medicines such as amprenavir, fosamprenavir, Darunavir. Stomach medicines such as cimetidine, cisapride. Antihistamines such as loratadine, astemizole, terfenadine. - Epilepsy (also known as fits or seizures) medicines such as phenytoin. - Diabetes medicines. - Mood medicines such as lithium, haloperidol, thioridazine, ziprasidone, trazodone, alprazolam, midazolam. - Anti-malarial pills such as chloroquine. - Organ transplant medicines such as cyclosporin, tacrolimus. - Cholesterol lowering medicines such as simvastatin, atorvastatin, lovastatin. - Strong painkillers such as trazodone or fentanyl. - Antibiotics such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin and related medicines. - Antifungal medicines such as itraconazole. - Laxatives such as bisacodyl and senna. - Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

      Are there any food restrictions

      Avoid alcohol. - Do not take grapefruit juice while you are being treated with Amiodarone. - Grapefruit juice affects the absorption of Amiodarone from the stomach.

      How do I store Amiodarone :

      Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
