Asmita 21S tablet is a combination medicine used for oral contraception (to prevent unintended pregnancies) and in the treatment of irregular periods. This medicine helps to prevent the release of the egg and its fertilization by the sperm and also reduces the risk of ovarian cancer. It is a safe and reliable method for contraception, if used correctly. It is not recommended for use in patients yet to achieve menarche (the first occurrence of menstruation) and who are below 18 years of age since the safety and efficacy are not clinically established. However, the uses mentioned here are not comprehensive, there may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.
The active ingredients of Asmita tablet are Drospirenone (3Mg) and Ethinyl estradiol (0.03Mg)
Drospirenone works by preventing the fertilization of the egg with the sperm and also induces changes in the hormonal levels contributing to the prevention of pregnancy. Ethinyl estradiol works by replenishing or replacing the hormone oestrogen that is normally produced in the body and changes the lining of the womb, rendering it unsuitable for pregnancy.

Take Asmita tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
This tablet can be taken with or without food. If significant avoid stomach upset occurs, it could be taken with food. Take the tablet at the same time every day as it helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body. This medicine is usually taken once a day.
Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested.

The medicine is unsafe to use for nursing mothers. Limited human data suggests that the medication may pass into the breastmilk and harm the infant. Consult your doctor immediately if the baby shows signs of increased sleepiness, breathing problems or difficulty in breast feeding.
Consumption of alcohol with this capsule is not recommended as it increases side effects of the medicine. If you consume alcohol on regular basis, relevant dose adjustments of the medicine may be necessary depending on your clinical condition.
This medicine does not cause drowsiness or dizziness. If you notice any abnormal reactions after taking the medicine, do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.
Grape fruit juice and caffeine should be avoided.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Asmita tablet with diltiazem, itraconazole, ketoconazole, ritonavir, rifampicin, efavirenz, nevirapine, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, efavirenz, phenytoin, folic acid.
Category X: Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.

Its use may also lead to uncommon side effects such as inverted nipples, hot flushes, rash, trouble breathing and swallowing.

This medicine is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients used in the tablet, history of or current breast cancer, cardiovascular disorders, oestrogen dependant tumours, undiagnosed genital bleeding, thrombolytic disorders, hepatic impairment, porphyria, pregnancy and lactation. Caution is advised among patients with diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, asthma, vision abnormalities, hypertension, severe hypocalcaemia, hereditary angioedema, cholestatic jaundice, vaginal infection, children.
