Augmentin Injection 1.2gm is used to treat infections of the ear, nose, throat, genitourinary tract, and skin. This injection is also used for the treatment of acute uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhea. Augmentin Injection 1.2gm is also used to treat sinusitis, acute bacterial infection, urinary tract infection, and otitis media acute. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which this medication may be used upon a doctor’s discretion.

The active ingredients of Augmentin Injection 1.2gm are Amoxicillin 1000mg and Clavulanic Acid 200mg/inj.

Mechanism of Action of Drugs

With its bactericidal property, Amoxicillin inhibits the cell wall synthesis in bacteria thus resulting in bacterial death.

Beta-lactamases are enzymes produced in bacteria which protect themselves from the action of antibiotics. Here, Clavulanic Acid acts by destroying or inhibiting this beta-lactamase therefore reducing the antibiotic activity of the bacteria and allows any external antibiotic sources to work.

Patients with the following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their health care professionals before taking the Augmentin Injection 1.2gm:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the drugs used in the Augmentin Injection 1.2gm such as Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid
  • Anaphylactic reaction to beta-lactams
  • Hemodialysis
  • Hepatic impairment associated with Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid therapy
  • Cholestatic jaundice associated with Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid therapy
Side Effects

Side and Adverse Effects

The following side effects may or may not occur during the usage of this injection. It is generally well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dosage guidelines. More common ones are generally mild and may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Rash
  • Glossitis
  • Stomatitis
  • Black hairy tongue

Rare but more serious adverse effects may include:

  • Anaphylaxis
  • Serum sickness
  • Exfoliative dermatitis
  • Stevens-johnson syndrome
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • Candidiasis
How to Use

How to Use

This medication is usually administered through parenteral route in a clinic or a hospital setting under supervision of nurse or a physician.

If self administered take the injection at prescribed dose and time.

Sterilize the area before taking the shot with an antiseptic swab. Pull the need cap out and take the liquid from the vial/ampoule through the syringe.

Spread the skin at the site of injection using your hand. Slowly dart the needle into the site where the shot needs to be given at a 30-degree angle.

Ensure the needle is appropriately placed in the blood vessel and slowly pull back the plunger. Now, inject the solution slowly into the spot and once done, quickly remove the needle. To finish, press gently at the site with an alcohol swab.

Overdosage

Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rash
  • Drowsiness

Take the injection only on the advice of a medical practitioner. Dosage adjustment or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

Pregnancy:

Augmentin injection 100mg may be used during pregnancy – no known risk of fetal harm based on animal data. However, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the treatment.

Lactation:

This medication may pass through breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Therefore, do not take this medicine without informing your doctor or a pharmacist.

Alcohol:

Interaction of alcohol with this medicine is unknown. Therefore, consult your doctor before using it.

Driving:

Since using this medicine would induce severe allergic reactions and convulsions, do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention/physical strength.

Drug Interactions:

Avoid taking warfarin along with Augmentin Injection 1.2gm as this may increase the risk of bleeding when both drugs combined together.
The therapeutic efficacy of anthrax vaccine will get reduced when used along with Augmentin Injection 1.2gm.

Precautions
  • Keep Augmentin Injection 1.2gm out of sight and reach of children.
  • Keep it in a cool and dry place, away from heat and moisture.
  • Do not use the medicine beyond its expiry date.
  • Do not accept the Ampoule/vial if any particles are floating In it.

What is Amoxicillin for:

Amoxicillin is used to stop or treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ears, nose, throat, urinary tract and skin.

How does Amoxicillin work:

It is a penicillin like antibiotic and works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

How should Amoxicillin be used:

To gain the most benefit, do not miss doses. Use as you have been told, even if you are feeling better. Take with or without food. Take with food if it causes an upset stomach. Chewable tablet: Chew or crush well. Mix crushed tablet with food. Do not swallow it whole. Extended release tablet: Take with food. Swallow tablet whole. Do not chew, crush, or break. Tablet for suspension: Mix the tablet in 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of water. Do not chew or swallow the tablet whole. There is a liquid (suspension) if you cannot swallow pills. Shake well before use. Those who have feeding tubes may also use the liquid. Flush the feeding tube before and after this drug is given. You may crush the tablet, melt it in water, and mix it with chocolate milk, milk, or pudding.

Common side effects of Amoxicillin :

Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). Yogurt or probiotics may help. You may get these products at health food stores or in some pharmacies. For women, vaginal yeast infection. Report itching or discharge.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. - Do not change the dose or stop this drug. - Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking Amoxicillin :

If you have an allergy to amoxicillin, any penicillin, or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very loose stools (diarrhea), even after drug is stopped. Any bruising or bleeding. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Amoxicillin with other medicines:

Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
