Auxitrol capsule, a dietary nutritional supplement increases bone strength & mineral content and also reduces the chance of fall & fracture. It prevents weakening of the bones in women after the menopause and bone disease in people with kidney problems (renal osteodystrophy). Calcium is needed by the body for healthy bones, nervous system, muscles and heart. The capsule helps boost immunity, prevent and manage calcium deficiencies. It is prescribed for the treatment of joint pains, osteomalacia, osteoarthritis, rickets, hypophosphatemia, hypoparathyroidism (causing low blood calcium). However, the uses of the capsule mentioned here are not comprehensive, there may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

How to Use

How to Use

Take Auxitrol capsule as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the capsule whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the capsule.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
The capsule can be taken with or without food. For better absorption, take the medicine with meals and avoid intake of large amounts of fibre-rich food. Take the capsule at the same time every day as it helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body.
Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested even though the symptoms disappear after the medicine has begun.

Overdosage

Avoid taking medicine more than the prescribed dosage. Overdose can lead to hypercalcaemia; extreme hypercalcaemia may lead to coma and death. Irreversible renal damage and soft tissue calcification may occur as a result of prolonged hypercalcaemia in some patients. Alert your doctor if you are taking Auxitrol capsule with aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin, digoxin, levothyroxine, antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones), carbamazepine, thiazide diuretics, lithium, verapamil, ceftriaxone.

What is calcitriol for:

This medication is a synthetic vitamin D analog, prescribed for hypocalcemia in patients undergoing chronic renal dialysis. It helps proper absorption and use of calcium and phosphate in the body.

How does calcitriol work:

It works by helping the body to use more of the calcium found in foods and supplements.

How should calcitriol be used:

PO- The recommended initial dose is 1 mcg (0.02 mcgkg) to 2 mcg administered three times weekly, approximately every other day. It comes as a tablet and capsule to take by mouth, with or without food.

Common side effects of calcitriol :

Dry mouth, muscle pain, increased thirst, loss of appetite, vomiting, metallic taste, upset stomach, constipation, difficult urination.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking calcitriol :

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Some drugs like phenytoin, phenobarbital, prednisone and some laxatives may affect the availability. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, pregnant, or planning to have surgery including dental procedures.

Can I take calcitriol with other medicines:

This drug will only work if you get the right amount of calcium from your diet. If you are being treated with dialysis, your doctor may also prescribe a low phosphate diet. Follow these directions carefully. If you do not have kidney disease, you should drink plenty of fluids when taking this drug. If you have kidney disease, talk to your doctor about how much fluid you should drink each day.
