      What is Buprenorphine for:

      It is used to ease pain. It is used to treat drug addiction and withdrawal.

      How does Buprenorphine work:

      Buprenorphine binds to parts of the brain to lower the need for pain drugs and help with withdrawal signs. It lowers the feeling of pain and how one reacts to pain.

      How should Buprenorphine be used:

      Use Buprenorphine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor. Do not use more than 2 patches at the same time. Apply to a clean, dry, hairless or nearly hairless skin area. You may apply to any ONE of the following skin areas: - upper outer arm. - upper chest. - upper back. - side of chest. Avoid applying on skin that is red, inflammed, irritated or scarred. Each patch should be worn continuously for 7 days. The new patch should be applied on a different skin area, preferably at the same time of day as the previous patch. Do not apply to the same skin area for the next 3-4 weeks. The patch should not fall off when you bathe or swim. If the patch falls off, apply a new one.

      Common side effects of Buprenorphine :

      Feeling lightheaded, sleepy, having blurred eyesight, or a change in thinking clearly. Avoid driving and doing other tasks or actions that call for you to be alert or have clear eyesight until you see how this drug affects you. Feeling dizzy. Rise slowly over a few minutes when sitting or lying down. Be careful climbing. Headache. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Hard stools (constipation). Drinking more liquids, working out, or adding fiber to your diet may help. Talk with your doctor about a stool softener or laxative.

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.

      What precautions should I take when taking Buprenorphine :

      Buprenorphine patch is not meant for the treatment of acute pain, opioid drug addiction or withdrawal symptoms. - Alert your doctor if you have myasthenia gravis, or if you previously had alcohol withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, anxiety or hallucinations. Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you get pregnant during treatment. Do not use Buprenorphine if you are pregnant. Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Buprenorphine. Alert your doctor if you are currently taking or have taken within the last 2 weeks, antidepressants called MAOI inhibitors, such as moclobemide, selegiline, phenelzine.

      When do I need to seek medical help

      If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Trouble breathing. Too much sweat. A fast heartbeat. Poor pain control. Change in thinking clearly and with logic. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very hard stools (constipation). Very loose stools (diarrhea). Dark urine or yellow skin or eyes. Feeling very tired or weak. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

      Can I take Buprenorphine with other medicines:

      Do not use Buprenorphine together or within 2 weeks of taking a type of antidepressant known as MAOI inhibitors, such as moclobemide, selegiline and phenelzine. Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here: - other painkillers such as morphine. - sleeping pills or anxiety medication such as diazepam, midazolam, alprazolam. - cough medicine such as codeine or dextromethorphan. - antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

      How do I store Buprenorphine :

      Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
