Carpela 21S Kit is a combination medicine used to treat skin conditions such as acne, oily skin and excessive hair growth (hirsutism), irregular menstrual cycles in women of reproductive age associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (high levels of male hormones called androgens). This medicine helps in regulating the production of these androgens as well as periods in females. It is also used as a contraceptive, hence avoid using any other contraceptive pill. However, the uses mentioned here are not comprehensive, there may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

The active ingredients of Carpela tablet are Cyproterone acetate (2 MG) and Ethinyl estradiol (0.035 MG)

Cyproterone acetate reduces the unwanted hair growth and acne by blocking the over production of androgens (male hormones) in the ovaries. Ethinyl estradiol boosts the effects of Cyproterone by reducing the levels of androgens in the blood. Together, they also help to regulate the menstrual cycle in PCOS.

Carpela tablet is usually well tolerated when used in the prescribed dosage guidelines. Most side effects are temporary and usually subsides on their own. However, consult your doctor if they persist for a longer duration. You may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

How to Use

 

How to Use

Take Carpela tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
This tablet can be taken with or without food. If significant avoid stomach upset occurs, it could be taken with food. Take the tablet at the same time every day as it helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body. This medicine is usually taken once a day.
Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested.

Overdosage

Avoid taking more than the recommended dosage. In case of accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage of Carpela tablet, symptoms vary in individuals, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

Kidney:

Caution is advised among people with kidney problems. Adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed. Regular monitoring of kidney function tests is recommended while taking this tablet. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consumption of this medicine.

Liver:

Extreme caution is advised among people with liver problems. Dose adjustments of the tablet may be needed. If you have any hepatic problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consumption of this medicine. However, use of this tablet is not suggested in patients with moderate to severe liver diseases.

Pregnancy:

Use of this tablet is not recommended during pregnancy as it is known to cause harm to the fetus. However, in some life-threatening situations, doctors may rarely prescribe if the benefits are more than the potential risks. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

Lactation:

The medicine is unsafe to use for nursing mothers. Limited human data suggests that the medication may pass into the breastmilk and harm the infant. Consult your doctor immediately if the baby shows signs of increased sleepiness, breathing problems or difficulty in breast feeding.

Alcohol:

Consumption of alcohol with this tablet is not recommended as it increases side effects of the medicine. If you notice any unusual or abnormal reactions after taking the medicine, report to your doctor immediately.

Driving:

This medicine does not cause drowsiness or dizziness. If you notice any abnormal reactions after taking the medicine, do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

Food:

Grape fruit juice and caffeine should be avoided.

Drug Interactions:

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Carpela tablet with diltiazem, itraconazole, ketoconazole, ritonavir, rifampicin, efavirenz, nevirapine, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, efavirenz, phenytoin, folic acid.

What is Cyproterone Acetate for:

This medication is an antiandrogen, prescribed for prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, priapism, hypersexuality, and hirsutism. It blocks the effect of the testosterone in the body.

How does Cyproterone Acetate work:

Cyproterone slows prostate cancer growth by lowering testosterone levels.

How should Cyproterone Acetate be used:

Adult: PO- Acne; Contraception; Hirsutism: The recommended dose is 2 mgday (with ethinylestradiol) for 21 days of the menstrual cycle. Palliative treatment for prostatic carcinoma: Initial- 300 mgday in 2-3 divided doses. Maintenance: 200-300 mgday. Control of libido: 50 mg twice daily. Hot flushes: 50mgday, may increase to 150 mgday in 3 divided doses if needed. It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food.

Common side effects of Cyproterone Acetate :

Flushing. Wearing layers of clothes or summer clothes and staying in cool places may help. Lowered night eyesight. Use care when driving or doing other tasks that call for clear eyesight. Keep work space well lit. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Enlarged breasts. Breast soreness. Skin irritation. Hair loss. Hair most often grows back when this drug is stopped. Change in sex ability. This most often goes back to normal. Harm to the liver may rarely happen.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. - Many times this drug is taken on an as needed basis.

What precautions should I take when taking Cyproterone Acetate :

If you have an allergy to cyproterone or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you have any of these health problems: Kidney disease or liver disease. If you are a woman.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Signs of infection. These include a fever of 100.5°F (38°C) or higher, chills, very bad sore throat, ear or sinus pain, cough, more sputum or change in color of sputum, pain with passing urine, mouth sores, wound that will not heal, or anal itching or pain. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very bad swelling or pain of hands or feet. Very bad belly pain. If you are planning to harm yourself or the want to harm yourself gets worse. Not able to eat. Feeling very tired or weak. Dark urine or yellow skin or eyes. Very bad skin irritation. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
