Cepodem 200Mg tablet is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat mild to moderate bacterial infections such as acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (inflammation of lining of the bronchial tubes), pneumonia (lung infection), pharyngitis or tonsilitis (infections of the throat and airways leading to lungs) and skin structure infections caused by susceptible strains of the bacteria. It is also effective in treating infections of urinary tract, ear, sinus and some sexually transmitted diseases. This medicine is not advised for treating a common cold, flu or other viral infections since it is not effective in treating these infections. It is not recommended for use in patients below 12 years of age. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

Cepodem 200Mg tablet works by inhibiting the formation of bacterial protective covering or cell wall which is fundamental for the survival of the bacteria. By doing so, the medicine kills the infection causing bacteria and prevents the infection from spreading without making them resistant to further treatment.

How to Use

Take Cepodem 200Mg tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
This medicine should be taken with food. Avoid taking antacids within one hour or two hours after you take the tablet as few antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb the medicine.
Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested even though the symptoms disappear after the medicine has begun. Stopping the medication too early can allow the growth of the bacteria to begin, which can lead to an infection relapse.

Overdosage

Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage of Cepodem 200Mg tablet, symptoms vary but you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

Inform your doctor if you develop signs of jaundice like yellowing of skin and eyes, itching and clay-colored stools while taking this tablet

Pregnancy:

This tablet is not considered safe to use in pregnant women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. Despite the fact that there are limited studies in human beings, animal studies have shown effects on the developing baby. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

Lactation:

This medicine is not considered safe to use in lactating women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

Alcohol:

Interaction of alcohol with this medicine is unknown. Any symptoms of abnormal reactions after taking the medicine should be reported to your doctor immediately. If you consume alcohol on regular basis, relevant dose adjustments may be necessary depending on your clinical condition.

Driving:

This medicine may decrease alertness, cause impaired judgement, affect your vision and make you feel dizzy, light headedness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

Food:

Intake of milk, cheese, yoghurt or any dairy products should be avoided as it may decrease the absorption of the tablet.

Drug Interactions:

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Cepodem 200Mg tablet with medicines used in the treatment of gout (allopurinol, probenecid), furosemide, ethinyl estradiol, anticoagulants (warfarin), antibiotics like tetracycline, methotrexate, drugs inducing hepatic enzymes (rifampicin), medicines for epilepsy (phenytoin, carbamazepine), methoxyflurane (concurrent use may result in renal toxicity).

How should Cefpodoxime be used:

Take Cefpodoxime exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. Take Cefpodoxime at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you dont, the infection will not clear completely. Take Cefpodoxime with food to improve the absorption. If you have been given tablets, swallow them whole. If you have been given an oral suspension, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

Common side effects of Cefpodoxime :

Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). Yogurt or probiotics may help. You may get these products at health food stores or in some pharmacies. - For women, vaginal yeast infection. Report itching or discharge.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. - Do not change the dose or stop this drug. - Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking Cefpodoxime :

Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (rash, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as cefalexin, cefuroxime, cefixime, ceftibuten or any other cephalosporin antibiotics. - Alert your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin antibiotics, for example, amoxicillin, ampicillin and cloxacillin. Penicillins are related to cephalosporins and if you are allergic to one, you may be allergic to the other too.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away.- Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.Very upset stomach or throwing up. - Very loose stools (diarrhea), even after drug is stopped. - Any bruising or bleeding. - Any rash. - Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Cefpodoxime with other medicines:

Cefpodoxime should not be taken with antacids and other gastric medicines such as cimetidine, ranitidine and famotidine. This is because these medicines could reduce the effectiveness of Cefpodoxime. If you must take antacids or gastric medicines, take between meals at least 2 hours before or after you have taken Cefpodoxime. - Alert your doctor if you are taking probenecid. - Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Refrigerate the oral suspension (between 2-8°C) once you have mixed the powder with water.
