Cepodem XP 325Mg tablet is a combination medicine used to treat bacterial infections such as acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (inflammation of lining of the bronchial tubes), pneumonia (lung infection), pharyngitis or tonsilitis (infections of the throat and airways leading to lungs), urinary tract infections, otitis media (infection of the middle ear), sexually transmitted diseases (gonococcal infection) and skin structure infections caused by susceptible strains of the bacteria. This medicine is not advised for treating a common cold, flu or other viral infections since it is not effective in treating these infections. It works by stopping or killing the growth and multiplication of bacteria. It is not recommended for use in patients below 10 years of age. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

The active ingredients of Cepodem XP 325Mg tablet are Cefpodoxime (200mg) and Clavulanic acid (125Mg)

Cefpodoxime is an antibiotic that works by inhibiting the formation of bacterial protective covering or cell wall which is fundamental for the survival of the bacteria. By doing so, the medicine kills the infection causing bacteria and prevents the infection from spreading without making them resistant to further treatment. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor which is effective against specific species of bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotic medicines.

How to Use

How to Use

Take Cepodem XP 325Mg tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
This medicine can be taken with or without food, as advised by your doctor. Avoid taking antacids within one hour or two hours after you take the tablet as few antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb the medicine.
Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested even though the symptoms disappear after the medicine has begun. Stopping the medication too early can allow the growth of the bacteria to begin, which can lead to an infection relapse.

Overdosage

Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage of Cepodem XP 325Mg tablet, symptoms vary but you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

Take Cepodem XP 325Mg tablet only on the advice of medical practitioner. Dosage adjustments or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

Kidney:

This medicine should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustments may be needed. Close monitoring of kidney function is advised. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult your doctor before the consumption of this medicine.

Liver:

This tablet should be used with caution in patients with moderate and severe liver disease. Dose adjustments may be needed. If you have any hepatic problems, it is highly recommended that you consult your doctor before the consumption of this medicine. Inform your doctor if you develop signs of jaundice like yellowing of skin and eyes, itching and clay-colored stools while taking this tablet

Pregnancy:

This tablet is not considered safe to use in pregnant women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. Despite the fact that there are limited studies in human beings, animal studies have shown effects on the developing baby. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

Lactation:

This medicine is not considered safe to use in lactating women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

Alcohol:

Interaction of alcohol with this medicine is unknown. Any symptoms of abnormal reactions after taking the medicine should be reported to your doctor immediately. If you consume alcohol on regular basis, relevant dose adjustments may be necessary depending on your clinical condition.

Driving:

This medicine may decrease alertness, cause impaired judgement, affect your vision and make you feel dizzy, light headedness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

Food:

Intake of milk, cheese, yoghurt or any dairy products should be avoided as it may decrease the absorption of the tablet.

Drug Interactions:

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Cepodem XP 325Mg tablet with medicines used in the treatment of gout (allopurinol, probenecid), furosemide, ethinyl estradiol, anticoagulants (warfarin), antibiotics like tetracycline, methotrexate, drugs inducing hepatic enzymes (rifampicin), medicines for epilepsy (phenytoin, carbamazepine), methoxyflurane (concurrent use may result in renal toxicity).

GI tolerance is poor specially in children. Other side effects are Candida stomatitisvaginitis and rashes. Some cases of hepatic injury have been reported with the combination.

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

What precautions should I take when taking Clavulanic acid :

If you have an allergy to calcium polystyrene sulfonate or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Signs of low potassium. Very bad belly pain. Very hard stools (constipation). Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Clavulanic acid with other medicines:

Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.
