      What is Carbocisteine for:

      This medication is a mucolytic agent, prescribed for reduction of sputum viscosity. It reduces the thickness of sputum and make easier to cough up.

      How does Carbocisteine work:

      Carbocisteine is a mucolytic.

      How should Carbocisteine be used:

      PO- Initial: The recommended dose is 750 mg 3 timesday, then 1.5 gday in divided doses. It comes as a capsule and syrup to take by mouth, with food.

      Common side effects of Carbocisteine :

      Nausea, gastric discomfort, GI bleeding, skin rash.

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances. - Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. - If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule. - If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

      What precautions should I take when taking Carbocisteine :

      If you have an allergy to this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.

      When do I need to seek medical help

      If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Signs of low potassium. Very bad belly pain. Very hard stools (constipation). Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

      Can I take Carbocisteine with other medicines:

      Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.

      How do I store Carbocisteine :

      Store it at room temperature.

      Pregnancy Category

      Category B: Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters).
