Cifran CT tablet is a combination medicine used to treat bacterial infections that affect your skin, joints, lungs, urinary tract and genital areas. It is prescribed for treating community acquired pneumonia, bronchitis (swelling and irritation of airways that regulates air passage in lungs), cystitis (swelling of urinary bladder), prostatitis (swelling of prostate gland in men), joint infection (septic arthritis), pyelonephritis (swelling of kidneys), inhalation anthrax, plague, gonococcal infection (sexually transmitted infection), bacterial vaginosis, amebiasis. This medicine is not advised for treating a common cold, flu or other viral infections since it is not effective in treating these infections. It is not recommended for use in patients below 18 years of age. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting the formation of bacterial protective covering or cell wall which is fundamental for the survival of the bacteria. By doing so, the medicine kills the infection causing bacteria and prevents the infection from spreading without making them resistant to further treatment.

Cifran CT tablet is usually well tolerated when used in the prescribed dosage guidelines. Most side effects are temporary and usually subsides on their own. However, consult your doctor if they persist for a longer duration. You may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle pain
  • Sneezing

Rare but more serious adverse effects may include:

How to Use

How to Use

Take Cifran CT tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
This medicine can be taken with or without food. Avoid taking antacids within one hour or two hours after you take the tablet as few antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb the medicine.
Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested even though the symptoms disappear after the medicine has begun. Stopping the medication too early can allow the growth of the bacteria to begin, which can lead to an infection relapse.

Overdosage

Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage of Cifran CT tablet, symptoms vary but you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

Kidney:

Liver:

Pregnancy:

Lactation:

This medicine is not considered safe to use in lactating women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

Alcohol:

Consumption of alcohol with this tablet is not recommended as it causes flushing, increased heartbeat, thirst, chest pain, nausea and low blood pressure. Any symptoms of abnormal reactions after taking the medicine should be reported to your doctor immediately.

Driving:

This medicine may decrease alertness, cause impaired judgement, affect your vision and make you feel dizzy, light headedness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

Food:

Intake of milk, cheese, yoghurt or any dairy products should be avoided as it may decrease the absorption of the tablet.

Drug Interactions:

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Cifran CT tablet with medicines used in the treatment of gout (allopurinol, probenecid), escitalopram, tramadol, aspirin, ethinyl estradiol, anticoagulants (warfarin), antibiotics like tetracycline, quinidine, medicines for epilepsy (phenytoin, carbamazepine), corticosteroids.

What is Ciprofloxacin for:

This medication is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, prescribed for certain types of bacterial infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract, skin, bones and joint infections. It is also used to treat gastrointestinal infections.

How does Ciprofloxacin work:

Ciprofloxacin works to harm the bacteria and fight the infection.

How should Ciprofloxacin be used:

Adult- Oral- The recommended dose range is 250 to 750mgday in divided doses. It comes as a tablet, capsule and syrup to take by mouth. It also comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein. It also comes as eyeear drops to instill over the affected eyes.

Common side effects of Ciprofloxacin :

Belly pain. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). Yogurt or probiotics may help. You may get these products at health food stores or in some pharmacies. Tendons may rarely get irritated and tear. Unsafe allergic effects may rarely happen.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. - Do not change the dose or stop this drug. - Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking Ciprofloxacin :

Do not take Ciprofloxacin if you have a history of allergic reactions (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to similar antibiotics such as levofloxacin, lomefloxacin, moxifloxacin, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin or ofloxacin. - Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. - Do not take Ciprofloxacin if you are pregnant. - Do not give Ciprofloxacin to children or teenagers unless instructed by the doctor.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. A fast heartbeat. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very loose stools (diarrhea), even after drug is stopped. Pain in back of the ankle. • Joint pain or swelling. Very bad muscle pain or weakness. Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet. Seizures. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Ciprofloxacin with other medicines:

Do not take Ciprofloxacin at the same time as antacids or supplements that contain aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc. These reduce the effectiveness of Ciprofloxacin. If you must take antacids or multivitamins containing aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc, take Ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after such products. Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here: - warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine). - any diabetes medicine. - theophylline (an asthma medicine). - amiodarone, sotalol (heart medicines). - psychiatric medicines. - phenytoin (an epilepsy medicine). - sucralfate, cisapride (gastric medicines). - other medicines such as didanosine, methotrexate, ciclosporin, ropinirole, tizanidine. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Are there any food restrictions

Do not take Ciprofloxacin with dairy products such as milk, cheese, yoghurt or ice-cream. Dairy products reduce the effectiveness of Ciprofloxacin when taken at the same time. Take Ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after you have taken any dairy products. - Avoid caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, tea and certain soft drinks. - Avoid alcohol.

How do I store Ciprofloxacin :

Store ciprofloxacin in the container it came in at room temperature. Keep it out of the reach of children.
