This medication is an antiarrhythmic agent, prescribed for high blood pressure and to control heart rate. It decreases workload on the heart by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors.
Esmolol blocks chemicals that fire up the body
Adult: IV- Arrhythmias- As HCl: Loading dose: 500 mcgkg; Maintenance: 50 mcgkgmin for 4 minutes. If response is unsatisfactory within the 1st 5 minutes, give 2nd loading dose of 500 mcgkg, then maintenance infusion at 100 mcgkgmin for 4 minutes. Perioperative HTN andor tachycardia during anesthesia: Loading dose: 80 mg, then 150 mcgkgmin via infusion, up to 300 mcgkgmin if needed. After anesthesia: Infuse 500 mcgkgmin for 4 minutes, and then infuse at 300 mcgkgmin if needed. Postoperative: Loading dose: 500 mcgkg, maintenance: 50 mcgkgmin for 4 minutes. It comes as a solution for injection, to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein.
Low blood pressure. Feeling dizzy. Rise slowly over a few minutes when sitting or lying down. Be careful climbing.
If you have an allergy to esmolol or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you have any of these health problems: Very weak heart or slow heartbeat without a working pacemaker. If you are more than 12 weeks pregnant.
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Trouble breathing. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Feeling very tired or weak. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.
Store it at room temperature (25Â°C), and in an airtight container. Keep away from children.
Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
