What is Ethambutol for:

It is used to treat TB (tuberculosis).

How does Ethambutol work:

Ethambutol works to harm the bacteria and fight the infection.

How should Ethambutol be used:

To gain the most benefit, do not miss doses. Use as you have been told, even if you are feeling better. Take with or without food. Take with food if it causes an upset stomach.

Common side effects of Ethambutol :

Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. - Change in eyesight may rarely happen. Eyesight most often gets back to normal when this drug is stopped.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking Ethambutol :

If you have an allergy to ethambutol or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you have swelling in the eye.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you have red-green color blindness. Change in thinking clearly and with logic. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Sudden change in eyesight, eye pain, or irritation. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Ethambutol with other medicines:

Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.

What is Rifampicin for:

It is used to treat bacterial infections. It is used to treat TB (tuberculosis) and stop the spread of TB in those who carry the bacteria but are not sick with the disease.

How does Rifampicin work:

Rifampin works to harm the bacteria and fight the infection.

How should Rifampicin be used:

To gain the most benefit, do not miss doses. Take as you have been told, even if you are feeling better. Take this drug at the same time of day. - Oral: - Take on an empty stomach. Take 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Take with a full glass of water. You may sprinkle contents of capsule on applesauce. Do not chew. There is a liquid (suspension) if you cannot swallow pills. Shake well before use. Those who have feeding tubes may also use the liquid. Flush the feeding tube before and after this drug is given. Shot: - It is given into a vein for a period of time.

Common side effects of Rifampicin :

Change in color of body fluids to orange. A long-lasting change in color of contact lenses. Do not wear contacts while taking this drug. Belly pain. Loose stools (diarrhea). Yogurt or probiotics may help. You may get these products at health food stores or in some pharmacies. Feeling dizzy. Rise slowly over a few minutes when sitting or lying down. Be careful climbing. Flu-like signs. These include headache, weakness, fever, shakes, aches, pains, and sweating. Mild pain drugs may help.
