      Defcort 30MG tablet is a gluco corticosteroid used as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant. It is used in the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy – DMD, (a rare genetic disorder primarily occurs in males that causes muscle degradation and weakness usually seen in early childhood) by reducing swelling and pain associated with it. It is also used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation that affects joints), psoriasis (skin disease with red, itchy and scaly patches), used to relieve swelling and pain associated with various inflammatory conditions such as asthma, allergies, ulcerative colitis (a condition that causes ulcers in your digestive tract), etc and cancer. This medicine works by inhibiting the release of chemical substances that are responsible for swelling and allergic reactions. However, the uses of the tablet mentioned here are not comprehensive, there may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

      How to Use

      How to Use

      Take Defcort 30MG tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
      Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
      The tablet can be taken with or without food. If significant stomach upset occurs, you could take it with food. Take the tablet at the same time every day as it helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body.
      Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested even though the symptoms disappear after the medicine has begun.

      Overdosage

      Avoid taking medicine more than the prescribed dosage. Overdose can lead to hypercalcaemia; extreme hypercalcaemia may lead to coma and death. Irreversible renal damage and soft tissue calcification may occur as a result of prolonged hypercalcaemia in some patients. Depending on the dosage of Defcort 30MG tablet, symptoms vary in individuals, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

      • Black tarry stools
      • Depression
      • Clotted blood in stools
      • Peptic ulcers
      • Bleeding under the skin

      Take Defcort 30MG tablet only on the advice of medical practitioner. Dosage adjustments or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

      Kidney:

      Caution is advised among people with kidney problems. Close monitoring of kidney function and adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consuming this tablet.

      Liver:

      Caution is advised among people with liver problems. Close monitoring of liver function and adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any hepatic problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consuming this tablet.

      Pregnancy:

      Use of this tablet is not advised unless the clinical condition of the patient requires treatment. Despite the fact that there are limited studies in human beings, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

      Lactation:

      The medicine is passed to infants through mother’s milk. Infants should be closely monitored. Since there is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking this tablet, consult your doctor if you are nursing mother and stay on the safe side.

      Alcohol:

      Interaction of alcohol with this medicine is unknown. Any symptoms of abnormal reactions after taking the medicine should be reported to your doctor immediately. If you consume alcohol on regular basis, relevant dose adjustments of the medicine may be necessary depending on your clinical condition.

      Driving:

      The tablet does not cause drowsiness or dizziness. If you notice any abnormal reactions after taking the tablet, do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

      Food:

      Grape fruit juice should be avoided.

      Drug Interactions:

      Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Defcort 30MG with antidiabetic medicines, live vaccines, rifampicin, salicylates, warfarin, antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones), carbamazepine, thiazide diuretics, estrogens, atenolol, atazanavir.

      What is Deflazacort for:

      This medication is a glucocorticoid, prescribed for anti-inflammatory conditions, and used as an immunosuppressant. It is a prodrug.

      How does Deflazacort work:

      An anti-inflammatory dose of 6 mg deflazacort is equiv to 5 mg prednisolone.

      How should Deflazacort be used:

      Adult: PO- Initial: Up to 120 mgday. Maintenance: 3-18 mgday. It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food.

      Common side effects of Deflazacort :

      GI disturbances, musculoskeletal, endocrine, neuropsychiatric, ophthalmic, fluid and electrolyte disturbances; susceptible to infection, impaired healing, hypersensitivity, skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, acne, myocardial rupture following recent MI, thromboembolism.

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

      What precautions should I take when taking Deflazacort :

      Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant. If you are breast-feeding.

      When do I need to seek medical help

      If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.
