      Desval ER 750MG tablet is an anticonvulsant medicine that is used to treat certain types of epilepsies, a neurological disorder in which there are recurrent episodes of seizures or fits. It can also decrease the symptoms of tiredness, fear or anxiety, difficulty concentrating, feeling irritable, confusion, uncontrollable jerking movements and sleep problems that often come with anxiety disorder. It is also prescribed for migraine treatment (characterized by a severe headache, eye pain, nausea & vomiting) and mania (mental disorder characterized by hyperactivity and racing thoughts). The medicine supresses the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain. However, the uses mentioned here are not comprehensive, there may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

      Take Desval ER 750MG tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
      Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
      The tablet may be taken with or without food. Side effects such as sleepiness or drowsiness may be reduced if taken immediately after meals. Take the tablet at the same time every day as it helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body.
      Do not use this medicine for durations shorter or longer than suggested by your doctor as it has a potential of becoming habit-forming. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested.

      Overdosage

      Avoid taking medicine more than the prescribed dosage. If you notice any unusual or abnormal reactions after taking the tablet, promptly seek medical attention.       Kidney:

      Caution is advised among people with kidney problems. Close monitoring of kidney function and adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consumption of this tablet.

      Liver:

      Extreme caution is advised among people with liver problems. Dose adjustments of the tablet may be needed. If you have any hepatic problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consumption of this medicine. However, use of this medicine is not suggested in patients with severe liver diseases. Any symptoms such as nausea, fever, dark urine etc should be reported to your doctor immediately.

      Pregnancy:

      This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy as it is known to cause harm to the fetus. However, in some life-threatening situations, doctors may rarely prescribe if the benefits are more than the potential risks.

      Lactation:

      The medicine is unsafe to use for nursing mothers. Limited human data suggests that the medication may pass into the breastmilk and harm the infant. Consult your doctor immediately if the baby shows signs of increased sleepiness, breathing problems or difficulty in breast feeding.

      Alcohol:

      Consumption of alcohol with this tablet is not recommended as it increases side effects such as difficulty in concentrating, dizziness, light headedness. Any symptoms of abnormal reactions after taking the tablet should be reported to your doctor immediately.

      Driving:

      The tablet may decrease alertness, cause impaired judgement, affect your vision and make you feel dizzy. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

      Food:

      Foods containing caffeine, tea, chocolates should be avoided as they stimulate your brain while this medicine calms the brain.

      Drug Interactions:

      Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Desval ER 750MG tablet with bupropion, mefloquine, pivmecillinam, carbamazepine, ethosuximide, aspirin, olanzapine, clonazepam, warfarin, zidovudine.

      What is Divalproex Sodium for:

      This medication is an anticonvulsant, prescribed for bipolar disorder, epilepsy and to prevent migraine headache. It controls the abnormal activity of nerve impulses in the brain and central nervous system.

      How does Divalproex Sodium work:

      Valproic acid and derivatives help clear thinking. It raises a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric in the brain. This chemical calms the brain. It helps steady mood.

      How should Divalproex Sodium be used:

      Adult: PO- Partial seizures; Primary generalized seizures- Initial-10-15 mgkgday in 2-4 divided doses. Max: 60 mgkgday. Acute manic episodes of bipolar disorder- Initial- 25 mgkg once daily. Max: 60 mgkgday. Migraine prophylaxis- 500 mg once daily for 1 wk, up to 1,000 mg once daily. It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food.

      Common side effects of Divalproex Sodium :

      Feeling lightheaded, sleepy, having blurred eyesight, or a change in thinking clearly. Avoid driving and doing other tasks or actions that call for you to be alert or have clear eyesight until you see how this drug affects you. Feeling dizzy. Rise slowly over a few minutes when sitting or lying down. Be careful climbing. Headache. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). Belly pain. Hair loss. Muscle weakness. Twitching. Not able to sleep.

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. This could cause seizures. Talk with your doctor.

      What precautions should I take when taking Divalproex Sodium :

      If you have an allergy to valproic acid or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you have liver disease. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant. If you are breast-feeding.

      If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very bad belly pain. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Not able to eat. Dark urine or yellow skin or eyes. Feeling very tired or weak. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
