      Duphalac Fiber Solution 200ml is generally used to treat constipation. It can also be used as an adjunct to protein restriction and supportive therapy for the treatment and prevention of portal-systemic encephalopathy (PSE). This includes both the hepatic precoma and coma variations. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which this medication may be used upon a doctor’s discretion.

      The active ingredient of Duphalac Fiber Solution 200ml is Lactulose 2.5gm/5ml.

      Mechanism of Action of Drugs

      Mechanism of Action of Lactulose:

      Lactulose is a synthetic, non absorbable sugar that helps in the treatment of constipation. When consumed orally, it gets broken down in the large intestine and draws water into the intestine. Thereby softening the stools and thus easing constipation.

      Patients with the following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their health care professionals before using the Duphalac Fiber Solution 200ml:

      • Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients used in the Duphalac Fiber Solution 200ml such as Lactulose

      The following side effects may or may not occur during the usage of this Duphalac Fiber Solution 200ml. It is generally well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dosage guidelines. More common ones are generally mild and may include:

      • Flatulence
      • Intestinal cramps
      • Abdominal distension
      • Nausea
      • Vomiting

      Rare but more serious adverse effects may include:

      • Diarrhea, severe (excessive doses)
      • Electrolyte disorders (excessive doses)
      • Metabolic acidosis (excessive doses)
      How to Use

      How to Use

      Do not exceed the dose prescribed by the doctor.
      Duphalac Fiber Solution 200ml is meant for oral administration. Shake the bottle well before administration. Dosage can be administered with the cap that comes along with the container.
      Avoid missing or forgetting a dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t consume two doses at the same time which may be dangerous to your health.
      Take Duphalac Fiber Solution 200ml at the prescribed time and dosage.
      Dosage as suggested by your doctor or follow the instructions given on the prescription.

      Overdosage

      Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

      • Diarrhea
      • Loss of electrolytes
      • Abdominal pain

      Take Duphalac Fiber Solution 200ml only on the advice of a medical practitioner. Dosage adjustment or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

      Pregnancy:

      May be used during pregnancy; no known risk of infant harm based on minimal systemic absorption into the system. However, do not take the medication unless recommended by your doctor. Do not decide to take it by your own descrition.

      Lactation:

      May be used during lactation based on minimal systemic absorption of the drug into the system. However, consider taking the medication only if suggested by a doctor. Do not decide to take it by your own descrition.

      Drug Interactions:

      May decrease the therapeutic effect of glutamine. This drug may increase the loss of potassium with thiazides, steroids, and amphotericin B. It may also increase the effects of cardiac glycosides. Therefore, caution always advised when used with other medications. Hence, inform your doctor about your current list of medications (if any) during the treatment.

      What is Lactulose for:

      This medication is a purgative and laxative, prescribed for chronic constipation. It works by drawing ammonia from the blood into the colon where it is removed from the body.

      How does Lactulose work:

      Lactulose lowers how many toxins get into the body. It softens the stool by raising its water content.

      How should Lactulose be used:

      It comes as a powder to take by mouth, with or without food. Adult: The usual adult, oral dosage is 2 to 3 tablespoonfuls (30 to 45 mL, containing 20 g to 30 g of lactulose) three or four times daily.

      Common side effects of Lactulose :

      Belly pain or heartburn. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea).

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Many times this drug is taken on an as needed basis.

      What precautions should I take when taking Lactulose :

      If you have an allergy to lactulose or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you are on a low-galactose or lactose-free diet. If you are taking other laxatives.

      When do I need to seek medical help

      If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Very loose stools (diarrhea). Very bad belly pain. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

      Can I take Lactulose with other medicines:

      Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.

      How do I store Lactulose :

      Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
