Uses and Benefits

Fosidal 8GM sachet contains Fosfomycin, which belongs to group of medicines known as antibiotics. It is used to treat acute cystitis (uncomplicated urinary tract infections) in women caused by susceptible bacteria. This medicine works by killing bacteria which can cause infections and helps to improve your symptoms and cure the infection. However, the uses of the sachet mentioned here are not comprehensive. There may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

Composition

The active ingredient of Fosidal 8GM sachet is Fosfomycin 3GM/ sachet

Mechanism of Action of Drugs

Fosfomycin is an antibiotic that works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria by interfering with the bacterial cell wall synthesis. It reduces bacterial attachment to cells lining the bladder and treats or prevents uncomplicated infections of the bladder.

Contraindications and Caution

Patients with following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their healthcare professionals before taking Fosidal 8GM sachet:

• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients used in the sachet
• Severe renal impairment
• Pyelonephritis
• Patient undergoing haemodialysis

• Renal and hepatic impairment
• Children
• Pregnancy and lactation

Side and Adverse Effects

Fosidal 8GM sachet is usually well tolerated when used in the prescribed dosage guidelines. Most side effects are temporary and usually subsides on their own. However, consult your doctor if they persist for a longer duration. You may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

• Headache
• Indigestion
• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Abdominal pain
• Dizziness
• Vaginal inflammation
• Metallic taste in mouth
• Unusual weakness and tiredness

How to Use

Take Fosidal 8GM sachet as instructed by your doctor. Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
The powder should be taken on an empty stomach at least one hour before or 2 hours after meals preferably before bedtime, after emptying the bladder. Take the powder at the same time every day as it helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body.
Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested even though the symptoms disappear after the medicine has begun.

Warnings and Precautions

Take Fosidal 8GM sachet only on the advice of medical practitioner. Dosage adjustments or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

Kidney:

Caution is advised among people with kidney problems. Close monitoring of kidney function and adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consuming this powder.

Liver:

Caution is advised among people with liver problems. Adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any hepatic problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consuming this powder.

Pregnancy:

Use of this medicine in pregnancy is considered safe unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. Despite the fact that there are limited studies in human beings, animal studies have shown low or no effects on the developing baby. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

Lactation:

The medicine is passed to infants through mother’s milk. Infants should be closely monitored. Since there is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking this sachet, consult your doctor if you are nursing mother and stay on the safe side.

Alcohol:

Interaction of alcohol with this medicine is unknown. Any symptoms of abnormal reactions after taking the medicine should be reported to your doctor immediately. If you consume alcohol on regular basis, relevant dose adjustments of the medicine may be necessary depending on your clinical condition.

Driving:

It does not cause drowsiness or dizziness. If you notice any abnormal reactions after taking the powder, do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

Food:

There are no known food interactions with this medicine.

Drug Interactions:

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Fosidal 8GM with live cholera vaccine, balsalazide, cisapride, domperidone, laxatives, bethanechol.

Category B: Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
