This medication is a man-made version of the hormone, used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and Paget’s disease. It is also used to treat conditions with high calcium levels in the blood such as cancers spread to the bone and hyperparathyroidism.
How does Calcitonin work:
Calcitonin stops bone loss. It helps get rid of calcium from the body.
How should Calcitonin be used:
Adult: Postmenopausal osteoporosis- 100 uday or every other day. Bone pain due to malignant neoplasm’s- 200 u 4 timesday, up to 48 hours.
Nasal-Postmenopausal osteoporosis- 200 uday, alternating nostrils everyday. It comes as a nasal spray and solution to be injected under the skin (subcutaneously) or into the muscle (intramuscularly). It is usually used once a day or once every other day.
Common side effects of Calcitonin :
Flushing. Wearing layers of clothes or summer clothes and staying in cool places may help. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Nose irritation. Irritation where the shot is given.

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. - Do not change the dose or stop this drug. - Talk with the doctor.
