This medication is a histamine (H2-receptor antagonist), prescribed for ulcer. It works by decreasing the amount of stomach acid.
Famotidine helps avoid harm to the GI (gastrointestinal) tract caused by stomach acid or infection.
PO- Adult- The recommended dose is 40mgday. Child- The recommended dose is 0.5 mgkgday at bedtime. It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with or without food. It also comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein.
Feeling dizzy. Rise slowly over a few minutes when sitting or lying down. Be careful climbing. Headache. Loose stools (diarrhea).
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Many times this drug is taken on an as needed basis
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Famotidine. - Alert your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease. - Let your doctor know if your gastric problem seems to be getting worse or if there is no improvement even with Famotidine. Do not take Famotidine for a long period of time unless instructed by your doctor.
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Trouble swallowing or speaking. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Change in thinking clearly and with logic. Chest pain or pressure or a fast heartbeat. Any bruising or bleeding. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
Do not take antacids together with Famotidine. If you must take antacids, take them at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after you have taken Famotidine. - Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid Alcohol
Store it at controlled room temperature and in an airtight container. Keep away from children.
