Uses and Benefits

Fungirex 30GM gel is used to treat various types of skin infections caused by fungi. This gel is used in treating athlete’s foot (itchy white patches between the toes), jock itch (red, itchy and ring shape around the groins), infections of skin surrounding the fingernails or toenails, infections of bearded skin, topical treatment of tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea pedis and in the treatment of cutaneous candidiasis, seborrheic dermatitis. This medicine inhibits the growth of fungi that cause infections and reduce swelling, redness and itchiness due to infections. However, the uses of this gel mentioned here are not exhaustive, there may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

Composition

The active ingredient of Fungirex 30GM gel is Miconazole 2% W/W

Mechanism of Action of Drugs

Miconazole is an anti-fungal drug that changes the permeability of the cell wall of the fungal cells and prevents their growth. It binds to the phospholipids of the membrane and inhibits the fungal CYP450 activity, thereby decreasing ergosterol biosynthesis that are essential for the development of the cell membrane. This results in the death of cells due to the loss of intracellular sections.

Contraindications and Caution

Patients with following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their healthcare professionals before using Fungirex 30GM gel:

• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients used in the gel

• Caution:
• Open wounds and broken skin
• Chronic application
• Children less than 12 years of age
• Pregnancy and lactation
• Avoid contact with mouth, eyes and mucous membranes

Side and Adverse Effects

Fungirex 30GM gel is usually well tolerated when used in the prescribed dosage guidelines. Most side effects are temporary and usually subsides on their own. However, consult your doctor if they persist for a longer duration. You may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

• Itching at the application site
• Slight burning
• Redness
• Peeling
• Blistering
• Skin rash
• Skin thinning
• Dry skin

How to Use

Use Fungirex 30GM gel as instructed by your doctor. Do not use this gel for durations shorter or longer than suggested by your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount prescribed even though the symptoms disappear after medicine has begun. Stopping the medication too early can lead to an infection relapse.
Before application wash with warm water and dry the affected area. Apply a thin layer of this gel twice daily or as advised by your doctor and gently rub. Do not cover the application area with bandages unless instructed by your doctor. Avoid getting this gel in contact with open wounds, eyes, mouth and nose.

Warnings and Precautions

Use Fungirex 30GM gel on the advice of your medical practitioner. Complete avoidance of the gel may be required in the following conditions:

Kidney:

Since there is not enough reliable information about the safety of using this gel for renal patients, consult your doctor if you have renal problems and stay on the safe side.

Liver:

Since there is not enough reliable information about the safety of using this gel for hepatic patients, consult your doctor if you have liver problems and stay on the safe side.

Pregnancy:

This gel is not considered safe to use in pregnant women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. Animal studies have shown no or low adverse effects on fetus; however, there are limited human studies. Though it is a topical preparation, it is recommended that you consult your doctor before using this gel.

Lactation:

This medicine is not considered safe to use in nursing mothers unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks involved. Since the effect of the medicine on infants is not clearly established, we recommend that you to consult your doctor before using the gel.

Alcohol:

Interaction of alcohol with this gel is unknown. Any symptoms of abnormal reactions after using the medicine should be reported to your doctor immediately.

Driving:

This medicine does not cause drowsiness or dizziness. Since there is not enough reliable information about the safety of using this gel, consult your doctor and stay on the safe side.

Food:

There are no known food interactions with this gel.

Drug Interactions:

There are no known drug interactions with Fungirex 30GM gel. Check with your medical professional about all the possible interactions of other topical corticosteroids or drugs you’re taking.

FDA Pregnancy Category

Category C: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
