It is used to stop or treat fungal (yeast) infections.
Amphotericin works to harm the fungus and fight the infection.
Amphotericin is given by infusion into a vein by a doctor or nurse. This drip infusion will be given over a 30-60 minute period. - At the start of treatment, you will be given a test dose of Amphotericin to check if you have an allergy to it. If you do not develop an allergic reaction, your doctor or nurse will continue to administer the rest of the infusion. - Follow your doctor’s or nurses instructions carefully. Do not stop this medicine unless your doctor has advised you to do so. You must complete the full course of antifungal treatment. If you dont, the infection will not clear completely. - Amphotericin comes in powder form and has to be mixed before administration.
Flu-like signs. These include headache, weakness, fever, shakes, aches, pains, and sweating. You may be given drugs before this shot to avoid these signs. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). Low potassium levels. Signs include feeling tired, weak, numbness, or tingling; muscle cramps; hard stools (constipation); throwing up; or a fast heartbeat. Change in balance. Flushing. Kidney damage. Sometimes this can be long-lasting.
Call your doctor to find out what to do
If you have an allergy to amphotericin or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you are breast-feeding.
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Trouble breathing. A fast heartbeat. Big change in balance. A big weight gain. Very bad swelling. Not able to pass urine. Cloudy or pink-red urine. Dark urine or yellow skin or eyes. Very bad belly pain. Very loose stools (diarrhea). Not able to eat. Feeling very tired or weak. Very bad muscle pain or weakness. Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here: - transplant medicines such as ciclosporin or tacrolimus. - antibiotics such as gentamicin, amikacin or polymyxin. - pentamidine (medicine for treatment of pneumonia). - corticosteroids (medicines for inflammation). - diuretics (water pills). - digoxin (a heart medicine). - muscle relaxants used for surgery. - cancer medicines. - flucytosine (an antifungal). Always inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid Alcohol
Store in a cool, dry place below 25 °C. Do not freeze. - Solutions prepared for intravenous infusion should be used immediately after preparation. - It should also be protected from light during administration. - Any unused solution should be thrown away. - Keep out of reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
