      Mechanism of Action of Drugs

      Mechanism of Action of Drugs

Gabapentin is an antiepileptic medicine that works by increasing the action of a chemical messenger known as GABA which suppresses the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain and prevents the spread of electrical signals that cause seizures. It also reduces the levels of chemical transmitters (glutamate, dopamine) and reduces pain by modulating calcium channel activity of nerve cells, protects nerve fibres and rejuvenates damaged nerve cells, together relieving neuropathic pain. Amitriptyline, tricyclic antidepressant, works by increasing the levels of chemical messengers – serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain that stops the movement of pain signals and maintains mental balance.
