Gemcal capsule, a dietary nutritional supplement increases bone strength & mineral content and also reduces the chance of fall & fracture. Calcium is needed by the body for healthy bones, nervous system, muscles and heart. The capsule helps boost immunity, prevent and manage calcium deficiencies. It is prescribed for the treatment of joint pains, osteomalacia, osteoarthritis, rickets, hypophosphatemia, hypoparathyroidism (causing low blood calcium). However, the uses of the capsule mentioned here are not comprehensive, there may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

How to Use

Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your health care professional. Take the capsule immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break/crush or chew the capsule.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose, if you do, take Gemcal capsule as soon as remember, however if its almost time for your next dose, skip the previous dose and take it according to your normal scheduled time.
Gemcal capsule can be taken with or without food. For better absorption, take the medicine with meals and avoid intake of large amounts of fibre-rich food. Take the capsule at the same time as it helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body.

Overdosage

Avoid taking medicine more than the prescribed dosage. Overdose can lead to hypercalcaemia; extreme hypercalcaemia may lead to coma and death. Irreversible renal damage and soft tissue calcification may occur as a result of prolonged hypercalcaemia in some patients. If you notice any unusual or abnormal reactions after taking the capsule, promptly seek medical attention. Depending on the dosage of Gemcal capsule, symptoms vary in individuals, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain
  •  Kidney stones

Take Gemcal capsule only on the advice of medical practitioner. Dosage adjustments or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

Kidney:

Caution is advised among people with kidney problems. Close monitoring of kidney function and adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consumption of Gemcal capsule.

Liver:

Since there is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking this medicine for hepatic patients, consult your doctor if you have hepatic problems and stay on the safe side.

Pregnancy:

Gemcal capsule might be risky to use during pregnancy. Despite the fact that there are limited studies in human beings, animal studies have shown effects on the developing baby. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

Lactation:

The medicine is passed to infants through mother’s milk. Infants should be closely monitored. Since there is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking this capsule, consult your doctor if you are nursing mother and stay on the safe side.

Alcohol:

Constantly consuming alcohol can negatively impact the absorption of the drug. Driving:

Food:

Foods that are rich in oxalic acid (e.g., spinach) and phytic acid (e.g., whole cereals) may reduce calcium absorption by formation of insoluble calcium salts. Grape fruit juice has been shown to reduce the bioavailability of Gemcal capsule.

Drug Interactions:

Alert your doctor if you are taking any of the below medicines with Gemcal capsule:
• Aspirin, Clopidogrel
• Warfarin
• Digoxin
• Levothyroxine
• Antibiotics: Tetracyclines, Quinolones
• Carbamazepine
• Thiazide diuretics decreases urinary excretion of calcium
• Lithium
• Verapamil
• Ceftriaxone

What is calcitriol for:

This medication is a synthetic vitamin D analog, prescribed for hypocalcemia in patients undergoing chronic renal dialysis. It helps proper absorption and use of calcium and phosphate in the body.

How does calcitriol work:

It works by helping the body to use more of the calcium found in foods and supplements.

How should calcitriol be used:

PO- The recommended initial dose is 1 mcg (0.02 mcgkg) to 2 mcg administered three times weekly, approximately every other day. It comes as a tablet and capsule to take by mouth, with or without food.

Common side effects of calcitriol :

Dry mouth, muscle pain, increased thirst, loss of appetite, vomiting, metallic taste, upset stomach, constipation, difficult urination.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking calcitriol :

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Some drugs like phenytoin, phenobarbital, prednisone and some laxatives may affect the availability. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, pregnant, or planning to have surgery including dental procedures.

Seek help if you have signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Inform doctor if you experience any bruising or bleeding, any rash, or if any side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take calcitriol with other medicines:

This drug will only work if you get the right amount of calcium from your diet. If you are being treated with dialysis, your doctor may also prescribe a low phosphate diet. Follow these directions carefully. If you do not have kidney disease, you should drink plenty of fluids when taking this drug. If you have kidney disease, talk to your doctor about how much fluid you should drink each day.
