      Glycomet SR (sustained release) 850 tablet is designed to release a drug at a predetermined rate in order to maintain a constant drug concentration which helps to treat type-2 diabetes to reduce or control hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels in the blood). This medicine may also be used with other drugs as a combination therapy. The medicine further helps to prevent blindness, kidney damage, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and other problems caused by type-2 diabetes. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which this drug may be used upon doctor’s discretion.

      The active ingredient of Glycomet SR Tablet 850mg is Metformin 850mg.

      Metformin works by decreasing hepatic glucose production by withholding gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis. This slows down the intestinal absorption of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity.

      Patients with the following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their health care professional before using Glycomet SR Tablet 850mg:

      • Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients used in the Glycomet SR tablet 850mg such as
      • Metformin
      • Metabolic acidosis
      • Diabetic ketoacidosis
      • Lactic acidosis
      • Hypoxemia
      • Dehydration
      • Sepsis
      • Surgery
      • Hepatic disease
      • Caution:
      • Congestive heart failure
      • Patients 65 years and old
      • Premenopausal anovulatory patients
      • Hypoglycemic risk

      Side and Adverse Effects

      The following side effects may or may not occur during the usage of the Glycomet SR Tablet 850mg. It is generally well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dosage guidelines. More common ones are generally mild and may include:

      • Diarrhea
      • Nausea
      • Vomiting
      • Asthenia
      • Flatulence
      • Indigestion
      • Abdominal discomfort
      • Anorexia
      • Headache
      • Metallic taste
      • Rash
      • Ovulation induction

      Rare but more serious adverse effects may include:

      • Lactic acidosis
      • Anemia Megaloblastic
      • Hepatotoxicity
      How to Use

      How to Use

      Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor.
      Swallow the tablet whole, immediately after opening the tablet from the strip. Do not break/cut/ chew the tablet whole.
      Avoid missing a dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it is time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t consume two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
      Take the Glycomet SR Tablet 850mg with food. Dosage as recommended by your doctor or follow the directions written on the prescription.

      Overdosage

      Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

      • Hypoglycemia
      • Lactic acidosis

      Take Glycoemt SR tablet 850mg only on the advice of a medical practitioner. Dosage adjustment or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

      Kidney:

      Do not use Glycomet SR Tablet 850mg if you have any severe kidney disease until unless advised by the doctor.

      Liver:

      Inform your doctor if you have any hepatic problems before taking the tablet.

      Pregnancy:

      Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while using this medicine – because it is not known whether this drug may harm a fetus or not.

      Lactation:

      Do not breastfeed an infant while using this medicine – because it is not known whether this drug may pass into breast milk or it could harm a nursing baby or not.

      Alcohol:

      Do not take alcohol while using this medicine – this may decrease your blood sugar levels and may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.

      Drug Interactions:

      Caution always advised when used with other drugs, especially with digoxin and furosemide.

      • Store between 15-30 degree centigrade away from light and moisture.
      • Do not use the medicine beyond its expiry.
      • Do not use Glycomet SR Tablet 850mg if the tablet strip is torn or the tablet is broken.

      What is Metformin for:

      This medication is an oral antidiabetic agent, prescribed for type 2 diabetes. It helps control blood sugar levels.

      How does Metformin work:

      Metformin lowers sugar and helps insulin work better.

      How should Metformin be used:

      Take Metformin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. - Metformin must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor. - Metformin must be taken with food. - If you are taking an extended-release type of Metformin, swallow the tablet whole with food. Do not crush or chew the tablet.

      Common side effects of Metformin :

      Low blood sugar signs include, anger, shaking, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or sweating. Keep hard candies, glucose tablets, liquid glucose, or juice on hand for low blood sugar. - Belly pain. - Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. - Loose stools (diarrhea). - Not hungry. - Bad taste in your mouth. This most often goes back to normal. - Too much acid in the blood (lactic acidosis) may rarely happen.

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. - Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

      What precautions should I take when taking Metformin :

      Metformin may not be suitable for you if you suffer from heart, liver, kidney, adrenal or pituitary disease. - Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. - If you are going for an operation, dental work or any X-ray procedure in which a dye is injected, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Metformin. - You may need to stop taking Metformin before the procedure and wait 48 hours to restart your medicine.

      When do I need to seek medical help

      If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. - Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. - These include wheezing, chest tightness, fever, itching, bad cough, blue or gray skin color, seizures, or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. - Very low blood sugar or very high blood sugar. - Very bad dizziness. - Trouble breathing. - Feeling cold. - Very bad belly pain. - Very upset stomach or throwing up. - Very loose stools (diarrhea). - A big weight loss. - Very bad muscle pain or weakness. - Feeling very tired or weak. - Any rash. - Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse

      Can I take Metformin with other medicines:

      A type of heart medicine called beta-blockers may mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia when taken with Metformin. Some examples of beta-blockers are metoprolol, atenolol and propranolol. - Inform your doctor if you are taking diuretics (medicines to remove excess water) such as hydrochlorothiazide; a group of heart medicine such as captopril or enalapril; a type of gastric medicine called cimetidine or birth control pills. - Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

      Are there any food restrictions

      It is important for you to maintain a healthy diet and weight in order to help keep your diabetes under control. - Avoid alcohol.

      How do I store Metformin :

      Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
