Meftal forte tablet is used in the treatment of mild to moderate pain associated with inflammation and pyrexia (fever), sprains, fractures, dislocations, headache, dental pain, postoperative pain, dysmenorrhoea (menstrual cramps), and menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding). However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which this medication may be used upon a doctor’s discretion.
The active ingredients of Meftal Forte tablet are Mefenamic Acid 500mg and Paracetamol (also known as Acetaminophen) 325mg.
Mefenamic Acid acts by restraining cyclooxygenase, an enzyme responsible for the formation of prostanoids. Prostanoids consist of prostaglandins and prostaglandins are responsible for inflammation and anaphylactic reactions. Thus reducing inflammation and pain.
On the other hand, Paracetamol (or Acetaminophen) primarily acts as an analgesic and an antipyretic agent. It also possesses anti-inflammatory properties. It produces
it’s analgesic effects by increasing the pain threshold and antipyresis by acting on the hypothalamic heat-regulating center.

Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor.
Swallow the tablet whole, immediately after opening the tablet from the strip. Do not break or chew the tablet.
Avoid forgetting/missing a dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it is time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t consume two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
Take Meftal Forte tablet with food or after food.
For adults, the usual dosage is 1 tablet 2-3 times in a day or as suggested by your physician, pharmacist or health care professional. For children to consult your doctor
before giving the tablet.
Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental over dose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms:
Take Meftal forte tablet only on the advice of a medical practitioner. Dosage adjustment or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:
Liver: Tell your doctor if you have any liver disease or disorders – he or she will suggest you whether to take the Meftal Forte tablet or not.
Pregnancy:Â
Mefenamic Acid: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Caution advised in the 1st trimester and avoid taking this tablet during the last 3
months of pregnancy.
Paracetamol (Acetaminophen): It can be used during pregnancy – no known risk of fetal harm.
Lactation:
Mefenamic Acid: Avoid breastfeeding while using this medicine, because the drug can pass through breast milk and harm a nursing baby.
Paracetamol (Acetaminophen): Can be used while breastfeeding – no known risk of infant harm based on human data and there are no human studies are available to estimate effects on milk production.
Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol may increase your risk of stomach bleeding and hepatic problems along with this tablet.
Category D: There is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant the use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
This medication is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), prescribed for dysmenorrhea and other pain. It decreases inflammation and uterine contractions.
Mefenamic acid blocks chemicals that cause pain. It lowers fever by changing the bodys thermostat in the brain.
It comes as a tablet and capsule to take by mouth, with or without food. The recommended dose is 500 mg as an initial dose followed by 250 mg every 6 hours as needed.
Belly pain or heartburn. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). Hard stools (constipation). Drinking more liquids, working out, or adding fiber to your diet may help. Talk with your doctor about a stool softener or laxative.
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Many times this drug is taken on an as needed basis.
If you have an allergy to mefenamic acid or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you have any of these health problems: GI (gastrointestinal) bleeding, kidney disease, or ulcer disease. If you are more than 24 weeks pregnant.
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Chest pain or pressure. Change in strength on 1 side is greater than the other, trouble speaking or thinking, change in balance, or blurred eyesight. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very bad belly pain. Very bad swelling or pain of hands or feet. A big weight gain. Black, tarry, or bloody stools. Blood in the urine. Very loose stools (diarrhea). Any bruising or bleeding. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.
Avoid Alcohol
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
