Glyceryl Trinitrate (also known as GTN) helps relieve sudden attacks of angina (chest pain).
GTN cannot cure your chest pain; it can only temporarily relieve your discomfort. If your doctor has given you other heart medicines, make sure you take them as directed.
Do not swallow, chew or crush the tablet; it must be placed under your tongue to be effective. GTN is absorbed into your body through the lining of your mouth.
If you are taking this medicine for the first few times, you may get a headache, your face may feel flushed and your heart rate may go up. This indicates that the medicine is working and is not a cause for worry. The symptoms should pass. You may also feel dizzy and a little faint. Sit down or find some form of support such as a wall. Seek help from family or bystanders if you do not feel well. If this medicine makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert. You may feel a temporary tingling sensation in the tongue or in the mouth. This is harmless and is not a cause for worry.
Call your doctor to find out what to do
It is very important that you DO NOT take GTN with medicines used to treat impotence, such as sildenafil (Viagra®), tadalafil (Cialis®), vardenafil (Levitra®) and other similar medicines. Alert your doctor if you have a history of heart problems or brain injury.
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.
