      Monocef Injection 500mg is used as an antibiotic medicine with a broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. This medicine helps to reduce infections of the lower respiratory tract, acute bacterial otitis media, urinary tract, uncomplicated gonorrhea, pelvic inflammatory disease, bacterial septicemia, bone and joint, intra-abdominal, meningitis, surgical prophylaxis etc. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which this medication may be used upon doctors discretion.



      The active ingredient of Monocef Injection 500mg is Ceftriaxone 500mg.

      Ceftriaxone helps in destroying the final step in the formation of a bacterial cell wall, thus arresting cell wall assembly – resulting in bactericidal (kills bacteria) action of ceftriaxone.

      Contraindications and Caution

      Patients with the following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their health care professional before taking Monocef Injection 500mg:

      • Hypersenstivity to any of the components used in the Monocef Injection 500mg such as Ceftriaxone or another cephalosporin
      • Hyperbilirubinemia (neonates <28 days old)
      • IV Ca-containing product use (neonates <28 days old)


      • Seizure disorder
      • Hyperbilirubinemia
      • Renal impairment
      • Concomitant hepatic and renal impairment
      • Vitamin K deficiency
      • History of GI disorder

      Side and Adverse Effects

      The following side effects may or may not occur during the usage of Monocef Injection 500mg. It is generally well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dosage guidelines. More common ones are generally mild and may include:

      • Local injection site rxn
      • Eosinophilia
      • Thrombocytosis
      • ALT, AST elevated
      • Diarrhea
      • Leukopenia

      Rare but more serious adverse effects may include:

      • Anaphylaxis
      • Bronchospasm
      • Stevens-Johnson syndrome

      How to Use

      How to Use

      This medication is usually administered through parenteral route in a clinic or a hospital setting under the supervision of a nurse or a physician.
      If self-administered, take the injection at prescribed dose and time.
      Sterilize the area before taking the shot with an antiseptic swab. Pull the need cap out and take the liquid from the vial/ampoule through the syringe.
      Spread the skin at the site of injection using your hand. Slowly dart the needle into the site where the shot needs to be given at a 30-degree angle.
      Ensure the needle is appropriately placed in the blood vessel and slowly pull back the plunger. Now, inject the solution slowly into the spot and once done, quickly remove the needle. To finish, press gently at the site with an alcohol swab.


      Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

      • Nausea
      • Vomiting
      • Diarrhea

      Take the Monocef Injection 500mg only on the advice of a medical practitioner. Dosage adjustment or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:


      Caution advised during the usage of this medicine in patients with renal problems. So, if you have any, inform your doctor.


      Do not take this medicine without doctors advise if you have any hepatic problems.


      May be used during pregnancy – no known risk of teratogenicity based on animal data and there may be a possible risk of Kernicterus and Agranulocytosis based on insufficient human data.


      This drug may be used during lactation – the risk of infant harm is not expected (based on the drug properties and limited human data). No human data are available to evaluate the effects on milk production.

      Drug Interactions:

      Caution always advised when used with other medicines such as OTC, herbal supplements, vitamins etc. However, tell your doctor about your current list of medication which you start or stop.

      • Keep Monocef Injection 500mg out of sight and reach of children and pets.
      • Keep this medicine in a hygienic place, away from heat and moisture.
      • Do not use Monocef Injection 500mg beyond its expiry.
      • Do not use the medicine if the vial is broken before its use.

      What is Ceftriaxone for:

      This medication is prescribed for certain bacterial infections such as gonorrhea, pelvic inflammatory disease, middle ear infection, meningitis (inflammation of the covering of the brain), and infections of the lungs, ears, skin, urinary tract, blood, bones and joints and typhoid.

      How does Ceftriaxone work:

      Ceftriaxone works to harm the bacteria and fight the infection.

      How should Ceftriaxone be used:

      To gain the most benefit, do not miss doses. It is given as a shot into a muscle or vein. This drug may be given at home. Your doctor may teach you how to give the shot. Wash your hands before and after use. Throw away needles in a needlesharp disposal box and take the box back to your doctor when it is full.

      Common side effects of Ceftriaxone :

      Irritation where the shot is given. - Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. - Loose stools (diarrhea). Yogurt or probiotics may help. You may get these products at health food stores or in some pharmacies. - For women, vaginal yeast infection. Report itching or discharge.

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

      What precautions should I take when taking Ceftriaxone :

      Do not give to a newborn whose skin or eyes are yellow or who has high bilirubin levels in the blood. - If you have an allergy to ceftriaxone or any other part of this drug. - Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.

      When do I need to seek medical help

      If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. - Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very bad belly pain. - Very upset stomach or throwing up. - Very loose stools (diarrhea), even after drug is stopped. Any bruising or bleeding. - Very bad skin irritation. - Any rash. - Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

      Can I take Ceftriaxone with other medicines:

      Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.
