What is polymyxin b for:

This medication is an antibiotic, prescribed for eye and other bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

How does polymyxin b work:

Gram negative bacteria except Proteus, Serratia and Neisseria. Salmonella and Shigella

How should polymyxin b be used:

It comes as eye drops to instill into the affected eyes as directed by your physician. Topical- Apply the ointment every 3 or 4 hours for 7 to 10 days, depending on the severity of the infection.

Common side effects of polymyxin b :

Dizziness, paraesthesia, muscle weakness, ataxia, confusion, drowsiness, psychoses, convulsions, coma. Neuromuscular blockade characterized by respiratory paralysis and apoea. Acute interstitial nephritis; nausea, vomiting, electrolyte imbalance. Topical: Hypersensitivity eg, macular rashes, risk of systemic toxicity if applied to large areas of broken skin. Otic: Ototoxicity, stinging and burning sensation. Ophthalmic: Hypersensitivity, itching, redness and oedema of conjunctiva and eye lid. Intrathecal: Meningeal irritation.

What precautions should I take when taking polymyxin b :

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Can I take polymyxin b with other medicines:

Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.

How do I store polymyxin b :

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
