This medication is an antibiotic, prescribed for certain types of bacterial infection. It kills or slows the growth of sensitive bacteria.
How does Chloramphenicol work:
Chloramphenicol works to harm the bacteria and fight the infection.
How should Chloramphenicol be used:
Adult: PO- The recommended dose is 50 mgkgday in 4 divided doses, may increase to 100 mgkgday in more severe infections.
Eye Drops: As 0.5% solution: Instill 1 or 2 drops 2 hourly.
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, on an empty stomach.
It also comes as eye drops to instill into the affected eyes as directed by your physician.
Common side effects of Chloramphenicol :
Bad taste in your mouth. This most often goes back to normal. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Loose stools (diarrhea). Yogurt or probiotics may help. You may get these products at health food stores or in some pharmacies. Anemia, low white blood cell count, and low platelet count may rarely happen. Feeling dizzy. Rise slowly over a few minutes when sitting or lying down. Be careful climbing. For women, vaginal yeast infection. Report itching or discharge. A small number of people may have low blood pressure or more acid in the blood.

If you have an allergy to chloramphenicol or any other part of this drug. - Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. - If you have any of these health problems: Bone marrow disease, liver disease, low blood cell count, or poor kidney function. - If you have G6PD deficiency.
When do I need to seek medical help
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Feeling very tired or weak. Very loose stools (diarrhea), even after drug is stopped. Any bruising or bleeding. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.

This medication is a corticosteroid, prescribed for certain conditions associated with decreased adrenal gland function.
How does Dexamethasone work:
Dexamethasone replaces a chemical made in the body. It stops or lowers irritation and swelling. It lowers or stops the bodys reaction to the allergen. It lowers the bodys harmful response to diseases of the immune system.
How should Dexamethasone be used:
PO- The recommended dose range is 0.5 to 40mgday.
It comes as a tablet and liquid to take by mouth, with food. It also comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein or muscle.
Common side effects of Dexamethasone :
High blood sugar may cause diabetes while on this drug. This most often goes back to normal when this drug is stopped. Chance of getting an infection. Wash hands often. Stay away from people with infections, colds, or flu. Belly pain. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Mood changes. Weight gain. Change in body fat. Weak bones with long-term use. Muscle weakness. Skin changes (pimples, stretch marks, slow healing, hair growth). Cataracts or glaucoma with long-term use. For women, vaginal yeast infection. Report itching or discharge.
What do I do if I miss a dose
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

If you have any of these health problems: Malaria infection in the brain or bad yeast infection.

These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Signs of infection. These include a fever of 100.5°F (38°C) or higher, chills, very bad sore throat, ear or sinus pain, cough, more sputum or change in color of sputum, pain with passing urine, mouth sores, wound that will not heal, or anal itching or pain. Feeling very tired, weak, or touchy; trembling; having a fast heartbeat, confusion, sweating, or dizziness if you missed a dose or recently stopped this drug. Trouble breathing. Very upset stomach or throwing up. A big weight gain. Sudden change in eyesight, eye pain, or irritation. If you have been exposed to chickenpox and have not had chickenpox or had a chickenpox vaccine. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

This medication is an antibiotic, prescribed for eye and other bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
How does polymyxin b work:
Gram negative bacteria except Proteus, Serratia and Neisseria.
Salmonella and Shigella
How should polymyxin b be used:
It comes as eye drops to instill into the affected eyes as directed by your physician. Topical- Apply the ointment every 3 or 4 hours for 7 to 10 days, depending on the severity of the infection.
Common side effects of polymyxin b :
Dizziness, paraesthesia, muscle weakness, ataxia, confusion, drowsiness, psychoses, convulsions, coma. Neuromuscular blockade characterized by respiratory paralysis and apoea. Acute interstitial nephritis; nausea, vomiting, electrolyte imbalance. Topical: Hypersensitivity eg, macular rashes, risk of systemic toxicity if applied to large areas of broken skin. Otic: Ototoxicity, stinging and burning sensation. Ophthalmic: Hypersensitivity, itching, redness and oedema of conjunctiva and eye lid. Intrathecal: Meningeal irritation.
