This medication is an antiprotozoal and antimalarial, prescribed for prevention of malaria, treatment of malaria.
It prevents the development of malaria parasites.
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth (orally), with food. Adult: PO- Malaria prophylaxis- 200 mgday with chloroquine or 100 mgday with atovaquone. Start 1 week before exposure to malaria or 1-2 days prior to travel. Continue throughout exposure and for at least 4 week (or 1 week if given with atovaquone) after leaving a malaria-infested area.
Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, weakness, loss of appetite, and dizziness.
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses
It may not work as well if you have severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea. It may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication. Caution needed for patients with history of kidney disease, pregnancy, breast feeding, elderly, and children. If you experience with vomiting within one hour after taking this medication, take another dose.
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.
Avoid Alcohol
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
