      Reclimet tablet is an oral anti-diabetic medication used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. This medicine is used with a proper healthy diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar level helps in preventing kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems and sexual function problems. It is also used to treat heart failure by increasing the removal of sodium by your kidneys. However, the uses of Reclimet tablet mentioned here are not exhaustive, there may be other conditions for which this medication may be used upon doctor’s discretion.

      The active ingredients of Reclimet tablet are Gliclazide (80Mg) and Metformin (500Mg).

      Gliclazide, a sulfonyl urea, works by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas and decreasing the hormones that raise blood glucose levels thereby reducing the fasting and post-meal sugar levels.

      Metformin reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.

      Patients with the following conditions are suggested to seek advice from their health care professionals before taking the Reclimet Tablet:

      • Hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients used in tablet and sulfonylureas
      • Severe renal impairment
      • Severe hepatic impairment
      • Type 1 diabetes
      • Diabetic ketoacidosis
      • Acute alcohol intoxication
      • Caution:
      • Loss of too much body water (dehydration)
      • Low blood pressure
      • Stable heart failure
      • Insulin secretagogues – Increased risk of hypoglycaemia
      • Prenatal azotaemia
      • Pregnancy and lactation

      Side and Adverse Effects

      The following side effects may or may not occur during the usage of Reclimet 50mg. It is generally well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dose. More common ones are generally mild and may include:

      • Hypoglycaemia
      • Ketoacidosis (increased ketones in blood or urine)
      • Constipation
      • Arthralgia
      • Drowsiness
      • Weakness
      • Bronchitis
      • Upper respiratory tract infection
      • Headache
      • Dizziness
      • Nausea

      • Dyspepsia

      Rare but more serious adverse effects may include:

      • Visual disturbances
      • Pruritis
      • Anaemia

      How to Use

      How to Use

      Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor. Swallow Reclimet tablet whole, immediately after opening the tablet from the strip. Do not break or chew or crush the tablet.

      Avoid missing or forgetting a dose. If you do, take Reclimet tablet as early as you remember; but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take it at the next regularly scheduled time.

      For best results, take the tablet with or without food daily at the same time.

      This medicine is not recommended for children below 18 years of age and elderly patients above 75 years.

      Overdosage

      Avoid taking Reclimet 50mg tablet more than the prescribed dosage. There were no reports of overdose during the clinical development program for this medicine. In case of an accidental overdose of the medicine, promptly ask for medical advice. Depending on the dosage of Reclimet tablet, symptoms may vary in individuals, you may experience the following signs or symptoms:

      • Hypoglycaemia
      • Heart palpitations
      • Dizziness
      • Hepatitis
      • Convulsions
      • Angina pectoris
      • Persistent and severe abdominal pain

      Take the tablet only on the advice of a medical practitioner. Dosage adjustment or complete avoidance of the Reclimet tablet may be required in the following conditions:

      Kidney:

      Extreme caution is advised among people with kidney problems. Close monitoring of kidney function and adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consumption of this medicine. However, use of this tablet is not suggested in patients with moderate to severe renal diseases.

      Liver:

      Among people with liver problems, caution is recommended. Adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any, it is highly recommended that you consult your doctor before the consumption of this medicine

      Pregnancy:

      Reclimet tablet is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Despite the fact that there are limited studies in human beings, animal studies have shown effects on the developing baby. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

      Lactation:

      There is no information regarding the presence of the medicine in human milk, or the breastfed infant, or the effects on milk production. However, inform your doctor if you are a nursing mother as it is still unknown if it causes harm to the foetus or not.

      Alcohol:

      Consumption of alcohol with Reclimet is not recommended as it increases side effects such as lactic acidosis, gastrointestinal bleeding, dizziness, light headedness. If found any symptoms of extreme drowsiness, vomiting, confusion, report to your doctor immediately.

      Driving:

      This medicine affects blood glucose levels and decreases alertness, cause impaired judgement, affect your vision and make you feel dizzy, light headedness, confusion, so do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

      Food:

      No information is available on interaction of Reclimet tablet with food.

      Drug Interactions:

      Alert your doctor if you are taking Reclimet tablet along with the following medicines:

      • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors: Acetazolamide, Dichlorphenamide
      • NSAIDs
      • Antihypertensive agents: Captopril, enalapril
      • Stomach medicines: Cimetidine, ranolazine, trimethoprim
      • Medicine for pain and inflammation: Phenylbutazone – increased hypoglycaemic effects
      • Anti-coagulants: Warfarin
      • Sulphonamides, quinolines, antibiotics, clarithromycin
      • Medicines for mood disorder: Chlorpromazine – increased blood glucose levels
      • Miconazole – Potentially fatal, increased hypoglycaemic effect
      Precautions
      • Keep the medicine out of reach of children.
      • Keep the medicine in a cool place, away from heat and moisture.
      • Do not use the medicine beyond its expiry.
      • Do not accept torn strip or broken tablet.

      What is Gliclazide for:

      This medication is an oral hypoglycemic (anti-diabetic drug), prescribed for type 2 diabetes.

      How does Gliclazide work:

      It stimulates the pancreas, which helps in more insulin secretion.

      How should Gliclazide be used:

      It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food. Initially start with 160mgs daily in two divided doses. May go up to 320 mgs daily in two divided doses.

      Common side effects of Gliclazide :

      Low blood sugar. Signs include anger, shaking, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or sweating. Keep hard candies, glucose tablets, liquid glucose, or juice on hand for low blood sugar. Upset stomach or throwing up. Many small meals, good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. Weight gain.

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.

      What precautions should I take when taking Gliclazide :

      If you have an allergy to gliclazide or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you have a sulfa (sulfonamide) allergy, talk with your doctor. If you have any of these health problems: Acidic blood problem, very bad kidney disease, very bad liver disease, or type 1 diabetes. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant. If you are breast-feeding.

      When do I need to seek medical help

      If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Signs of infection. These include a fever of 100.5°F (38°C) or higher, chills, very bad sore throat, ear or sinus pain, cough, more sputum or change in color of sputum, pain with passing urine, mouth sores, wound that will not heal, or anal itching or pain. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very low blood sugar or very high blood sugar. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

      Can I take Gliclazide with other medicines:

      Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.
