Shelcal syrup is used in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic renal failure and hyperacidity. The medicine is also used to treat calcium deficiency in supplementation during growth, pregnancy, lactation, refractory rickets, hyperparathyroidism, and controlling hypocalcemia and renal osteodystrophy in patients with chronic renal failure who had undergone dialysis. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which this medication may be used upon a doctor’s discretion.
The active ingredients of Shelcal Syrup 200ml are Calcium Carbonate 625mg and Vitamin D3 (also known as Cholecalciferol) 125 IU/5ml.
Calcium Carbonate is an antacid which works by neutralizing the acid released in the stomach.
On the other hand, Vitamin D3 (also known as Cholecalciferol) is a fat-soluble vitamin naturally synthesized in the body when the skin is exposed to sunshine. It acts by regulating phosphorous and calcium levels in the body.

Shelcal syrup 200ml is meant for oral administration. Shake the bottle well before consuming. Dosage can be administered with the cap that comes along with the container.
Avoid missing a dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it is time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t consume two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.

Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience any one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

Calcium Carbonate: May be used during pregnancy – no known risks of fetal harm based on human data.
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol): May be used during pregnancy. For pregnant patients with vitamin D deficiency, 1k-2k units per day can be used. Note that there can be a risk of teratogenicity if the intake is more than the prescribed.
Calcium Carbonate: May be used during lactation – no known risks of infant harm based on drug properties.
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol): May be used during lactation. Daily recommended dose: 5k-6k per day while breastfeeding. Simultaneously, the calcium levels of the breastfed infant should be monitored because there may be possible risk of infant hypercalcemia and also, there is no human data available to asses effects on production of milk and the possible risks.
Avoid using fiber content food along with the syrup.
Avoid taking olestra, a polyester derived from sucrose.
When used along with corticosteroids, the absorption of calcium in the body reduces.
When used along with tetracyclines, it affects the absorption of tetracyclines.
Urinary excretion of calcium may be decreased with the use of thiazide diuretics.
Category C: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

Prevent bones from breaking easily, especially bones in the spine.
Take this medication with a large glass of water during or after a meal.If it is a chewable tablet,it must be chewed before swallowing. It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with or without food.
Constipation – People who are constipated can have trouble having bowel movements. Upset stomach
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Many times this drug is taken on an as needed basis.
If you have an allergy to calcium or any other part of this drug. - Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
Sometimes drugs are not safe when you take them with certain other drugs and food. - Taking them together can cause bad side effects. - Be sure to talk to your doctor about all the drugs you take.
Avoid Alcohol
Store at room temperature in a tight container.Keep it away from sunlight and moisture.
