Shelcal CT Tablet is used to treat conditions caused by calcium deficiency such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, improper activity of parathyroid gland. This medicine also acts as a supplement during reduced calcium levels, to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis and blood coagulation. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which this medication may be used upon a doctor’s discretion.
The active ingredients of Shelcal CT tablet are Calcitrol 0.25mcg and Elemental Calcium 500mg.
Calcitriol is the active form of Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) which acts by stimulating the Calcium and Phosphate absorption. It stimulates bone resorption, renal tubular resorption. The drug also decreases PTH levels and restores bone mineralization.
Elemental Calcium is an antacid which works by neutralizing the acid released in the stomach.

The following side effects may or may not occur during the usage of this Shelcal CT tablet. It is generally well tolerated when taken in the prescribed dosage guidelines. More common ones are generally mild and may include:

Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor.
Swallow Shelcal CT tablet whole, immediately after opening the tablet from the strip. Do not break or chew the tablet whole.
Avoid missing a dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it is time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t consume two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
Shelcal CT Tablet may be taken with or without food.
The usual dosage for adults is 1 tablet per day or as directed by your physician.
Avoid taking more than the prescribed dosage. In case of an accidental overdose, promptly seek medical advice. Depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary but you may experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

Inform your doctor if you have any renal problems before taking the medicine.
Inform your doctor if you have any hepatic problems before consuming Shelcal CT Tablet.
Calcitrol: Caution advised during pregnancy – no human data available to evaluate risks on fetus.
Elemental Calcium: May be used during pregnancy – no known risks on fetal harm based on human data.
Calcitrol: Caution advised during breastfeeding – limited human data suggests possible risks of hypercalcemia to breast-fed infant. But no human data available to evaluate effects on production of milk.
Elemental Calcium: May be used during lactation – no known risks of infant harm based on drug properties.
Caution always advised when used with other drugs. Inform your doctor about all your medication which you are using currently.
Category C: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
This medication is a synthetic vitamin D analog, prescribed for hypocalcemia in patients undergoing chronic renal dialysis. It helps proper absorption and use of calcium and phosphate in the body.
It works by helping the body to use more of the calcium found in foods and supplements.
PO- The recommended initial dose is 1 mcg (0.02 mcgkg) to 2 mcg administered three times weekly, approximately every other day. It comes as a tablet and capsule to take by mouth, with or without food.
Dry mouth, muscle pain, increased thirst, loss of appetite, vomiting, metallic taste, upset stomach, constipation, difficult urination.
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug. Talk with the doctor.
Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Some drugs like phenytoin, phenobarbital, prednisone and some laxatives may affect the availability. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, pregnant, or planning to have surgery including dental procedures.
Seek help if you have signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Inform doctor if you experience any bruising or bleeding, any rash, or if any side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
This drug will only work if you get the right amount of calcium from your diet. If you are being treated with dialysis, your doctor may also prescribe a low phosphate diet. Follow these directions carefully. If you do not have kidney disease, you should drink plenty of fluids when taking this drug. If you have kidney disease, talk to your doctor about how much fluid you should drink each day.
Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice.
Store the medication at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
