Tegrital 200MG tablet is anti-epileptic medicine used for the treatment of epilepsy, certain type of seizures and chronic pain caused by nerve damage due to spinal cord injury or diabetes (diabetic neuropathy). It is also prescribed in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that affects the nerves that carries sensations from face to the brain characterized by chronic pain. The tablet also helps in reducing symptoms such as uncontrollable jerking movements, loss of awareness, anxiety, confusion or fear and improves nerve conduction. However, the uses mentioned here are not exhaustive. There may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

How to Use
How to Use

Take Tegrital 200MG tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
Tegrital 200MG tablet should be taken with food. Take the tablet at the same time as it helps to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body.
Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested even though the symptoms disappear after the medicine has begun.

Overdosage

Avoid taking medicine more than the prescribed dosage. If you notice any unusual or abnormal reactions after taking the tablet, promptly seek medical attention. Depending on the dosage of Tegrital 200MG tablet, symptoms vary in individuals, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

Lactation:

Alert your doctor if you are taking Tegrital 200MG tablet with diltiazem, azole antifungal agents, ethinyl oestradiol, delavirdine, cimetidine, acetazolamide, cisplatin, phenytoin, theophylline, tacrolimus, warfarin.

What is Carbamazepine for:

This medication is an anticonvulsant drug, prescribed for epilepsy and bipolar disorder, as well as trigeminal neuralgia. It works by reducing or blocking certain responses in the brain.

How does Carbamazepine work:

Carbamazepine calms the brain. - It helps steady mood.

How should Carbamazepine be used:

Adult: PO Epilepsy Initial: 100-200 mg 1-2 timesday, may increase slowly. Maintenance: 0.8-1.2 gday in divided doses. Max: 2 gday. Prophylaxis of bipolar disorder Initial: 400 mgday in divided doses may increase slowly. Maintenance: 400-600 mgday. Max: 1.6 gday. Trigeminal neuralgia Initial: 100 mg 1-2 timesday, may increase slowly. Maintenance: 400-800 mgday in 2-4 divided doses. Max: 1.2 gday. Rectal Epilepsy -250 mg 6 hourly. Children 6-12 years of age – Initial- Either 100 mg b.i.d. for tablets or XR tablets, or ½ teaspoon q.i.d. for suspension (200 mgday). Children 6 years of age – Initial- 10-20 mgkgday b.i.d. or t.i.d. as tablets, or q.i.d. as suspension. It comes as a capsule to take by mouth, with food.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. - Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. - Do not change the dose or stop this drug. - Talk with the doctor.

What precautions should I take when taking Carbamazepine :

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. - Alert your doctor if you have blood disorders or if you are allergic to a type of antidepressants known as tricyclic antidepressants. - Alert your doctor if you are currently taking or have taken antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as isocarboxacid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine in the last 14 days.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. - Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. - Signs of infection. These include a fever of 100.5°F (38°C) or higher, chills, very bad sore throat, ear or sinus pain, cough, more sputum or change in color of sputum, pain with passing urine, mouth sores, wound that will not heal, or anal itching or pain. - Signs of low mood (depression), thoughts of killing yourself, nervousness, emotional ups and downs, thinking that is not normal, anxiety, or lack of interest in life. - Very bad dizziness or passing out. - Change in thinking clearly and with logic. Big change in balance. Very upset stomach or throwing up. - Any bruising or bleeding. Yellow skin or eyes. Not able to eat. Feeling very tired or weak. If seizures are worse or not the same after starting this drug. Very bad mouth irritation. Very bad skin irritation. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

Can I take Carbamazepine with other medicines:

Do not take Carbamazepine if you are currently taking or have taken antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as isocarboxacid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine in the last 14 days. Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here: - other epilepsy medicines. - antidepressants such as fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, sertraline, paroxetine, mianserin. - mood medicines such as nefazodone, haloperidol, risperidone or lithium. - blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin. - asthma medicines such as theophylline - antifungal medicines such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, miconazole. - worm medicines such as albendazole, mebendazole (only when used long-term). - antibiotics such as doxycycline, erythromycin, clarithromycin. - birth control pills. - sleeping pills. - heart medicine such as diltiazem, verapamil. - cholesterol medicine such as simvastatin. - TB medicine, especially isoniazid. - cancer medicines. - HIV (AIDS). medicines such as ritonavir. - other medicines such as danazol, ciclosporin. - As Carbamazepine may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills, ask your doctor about the use of additional birth control methods.
