      What is Methimazole for:

      This medication is an antithyroid agent, prescribed for hyperthyroidism.

      How does Methimazole work:

      It works by inhibiting the production of thyroid hormone.

      How should Methimazole be used:

      It works by inhibiting the production of thyroid hormone. Adult: The initial daily dosage is 15 mg. It may be increased upto 60 mg, divided into 3 doses at 8-hour intervals. The maintenance dosage is 5 to 15 mg daily. Pediatric: Initially, the daily dosage is 0.4 mgkg, divided into 3 doses and given at 8-hour intervals.

      Common side effects of Methimazole :

      Rash, hives, abnormal loss of hair, itching and skin pigmentation. Tingling, headache, drowsiness, dizziness and fainting. Loss of taste, swelling and jaundice.

      What do I do if I miss a dose

      Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Many times this drug is taken on an as needed basis.

      What precautions should I take when taking Methimazole :

      Caution should be exercised in patients with history of decrease in blood cells, liver disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

      When do I need to seek medical help

      If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Very loose stools (diarrhea), even after drug is stopped. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

      Can I take Methimazole with other medicines:

      It may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or lightheadedness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

      How do I store Methimazole :

      Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. - Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
