Tuswyn DM tablet is a combination medicine used to relieve dry cough (or non-productive cough where phlegm or mucus in not produced) and symptoms of common cold associated with fever, which includes stuffy nose, runny nose, sneezing, throat irritation, congestion. It predominantly relieves symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis, breathing difficulties, coughing, nasal congestion, etc. caused by bronchospasm. It helps to loosen thick mucus, making it easier to cough out, thus making easier for air to move in and out. This medicine also reduces the activity of cough centre in brain. However, the uses of the tablet mentioned here are not comprehensive, there may be other conditions for which the medication may be used upon your doctor’s discretion.

The active ingredients of Tuswyn DM tablet are Chlorpheniramine maleate (2Mg), Dextromethorphan (10Mg) and Phenylephrine (5Mg)

Chlorpheniramine maleate is an antiallergic medicine which blocks chemical messenger, histamine to relieve symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis such as stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that works by reducing cough centre activity in the brain. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that acts by narrowing the small blood vessels providing relief from congestion and stuffiness in the nose.

How to Use

How to Use

Take Tuswyn DM tablet as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, immediately after opening it from the strip. Do not break or crush or chew the tablet.
Avoid missing or forgetting the dose. If you do, take it as soon as you remember; but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip it and take it according to your normal schedule. Don’t swallow two doses at the same time which is dangerous to your health.
The tablet can be taken with or without food. Take the tablet at the same time every day as it helps to maintain consistent level of medicine in the body.
Do not change the dose or stop taking the medicine before completion of the course or without consulting your doctor. Continue to use this drug until completion of the maximum amount suggested even though the symptoms disappear after the medicine has begun.

Overdosage

Avoid taking medicine more than the prescribed dosage. If you notice any unusual or abnormal reactions after taking the tablet, promptly seek medical attention. Depending on the dosage of Tuswyn DM tablet, symptoms vary in individuals, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

Take Tuswyn DM tablet only on the advice of medical practitioner. Dosage adjustments or complete avoidance of the medication may be required in the following conditions:

Kidney:

Caution is advised among people with kidney problems. Close monitoring of kidney function and adjustments of dose of the medicine may be needed based on the clinical condition of the patient. If you have any renal problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consuming this tablet.

Liver:

Extreme caution is advised among patients with liver problems. Dose adjustments of the medicine may be needed. If you have any hepatic problems, it is highly recommended that you consult doctor before the consuming this medicine. However, this medicine is not recommended in patients with severe liver impairment.

Pregnancy:

This tablet should be used with caution during pregnancy. Despite the fact that there are limited studies in human beings, animal studies have shown effects on the developing baby. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before consuming this medicine.

Lactation:

The medicine is likely unsafe to use for nursing mothers. Limited human data suggests that the medication may pass into the breastmilk and harm the infant. Consult your doctor immediately if the baby shows signs of increased sleepiness, breathing problems or difficulty in breast feeding.

Alcohol:

Consumption of alcohol with this tablet is not recommended as it increases side effects such as headache, dizziness, light headedness. Any symptoms of abnormal reactions after taking the expectorant should be reported to your doctor immediately.

Driving:

The tablet may decrease alertness, cause impaired judgement, affect your vision and make you feel dizzy, difficulty in concentration, fatigue, light headedness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or involve in any works which may demand your attention or physical strength.

Food:

Dairy products should be avoided.

Drug Interactions:

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines which includes over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription. Alert your doctor if you are taking Tuswyn DM tablet with warfarin, antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones, erythromycin, cefuroxime, doxycycline, gentamycin), increased toxic effects with fluoxetine, antidiabetic drugs, paroxetine, quinidine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors used in treating depression, anticonvulsants (phenytoin, phenobarbitone, carbamazepine, primidone).

Adult: PO- Allergic conditions- 4 mg 4-6 hourly. Max: 24 mgday. IVIMSC- Adjunct in anaphylactic shock- 10-20 mg. Total max: 40 mgday. It comes as a tablet and syrup to take by mouth, with or without food. It also comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein, muscle, or under the skin.

Common side effects of Chlorpheniramine Maleate :

Feeling lightheaded, sleepy, having blurred eyesight, or a change in thinking clearly. Avoid driving and doing other tasks or actions that call for you to be alert or have clear eyesight until you see how this drug affects you. Headache. Dry mouth. Good mouth care, sucking hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum may help. See a dentist often.

What do I do if I miss a dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. - If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. - Many times this drug is taken on an as needed basis.

If you have an allergy to chlorpheniramine or any other part of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs. If you have any of these health problems: Asthma, enlarged prostate gland, glaucoma, bowel block, ulcer disease, or trouble passing urine. If you are breast-feeding.

When do I need to seek medical help

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug. These include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Feeling very tired or weak. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.
